1997 Pan American Junior Championships



Location: Havana, Cuba

Date: 18-20 July 1997

Qualifying Trials: 1997 Canadian Junior (11-13 July) and Combined Events (10,11 July) Championships at Rotary Stadium, Abbotsford, British Columbia

Eligibility: Must be a registred athlete member of Athletics Canada, a Canadian citizen with current passport as at midnight 10 July 1997 or have been granted Landed Immigrant status after 10 July 1993.

The purpose of these selection criteria is to describe a principally self funded National Junior Team competition opportunity for approximately 40 athletes. It will outline a funding formula for the top 20 athletes to receive air travel support. Personal fund raising with the goal of participating at the 1997 Pan American Junior Championships is encouraged. Athletes ranked in the top 8 in the 1996 Athletics Canada junior ranking will, upon request, receive a letter of endorsement for fundraising purposes. Athletes wishing to be selected for the Pan American Junior team MUST bring their passports and waiver forms (if under 18) to the national junior or combined events championships and will be prepared to settle, on site at the championships, all financial matters related to their participation in the Pan Am Junior Championships.

The following information is not comprehensive, for further details please contact the national office.

- All athletes who wish to be considered for selection to the Pan American Junior Championships Team must attend Athletics Canada's 1997 Canadian Junior or Combined Events Championships.

- There will be no pre-selection.

- A maximum of 2 athletes per individual event will be selected.

- Athletes who compete in the 1997 Pan American Junior Championships will not be eligible to be considered for any other National Team until October 1997. Please note there will be no Junior Combined Events Dual in 1997.

-Athletes finishing first or second in their event at the Trials will be eligible for selection and will be placed in the "Selection Pool". Should a first and/or second place finisher not wish to attend the Pan Am Juniors, up to the 4th place finisher in that event will be eligible for selection and placed in the Selection Pool.

-Eligible athletes must inform the National Team Selection Committee prior to the end of the Trials of their intention to compete and must provide a $250 deposit to hold their place on the Team by the end of the Trials.

-Athletics Canada will announce the Team on 13 July 1997.
