Bronze for Wittrin at CWG

Sept. 16 1998

Canada received it's first medal in athletics and throws on the first day of competition at the Commonwealth Games when Canadian record holder Caroline Wittrin received the bronze for her throw in women's hammer. Wittrin threw 61.67m to claim third spot. Debbie Sosimenko of Australia won the gold while Lorraine Shaw of England was second. Michelle Fournier finished 8th with a toss of 57.78m while Patti Pilsner-Steinke finished 9th with a throw of 56.32m.

Tomorrow John Stoikos will try to overcome the stomache flu he has had to win a medal in men's hammer. Stoikos has lost 10 pounds due to the flu bug since arriving in Kuala Lumpur but is always a tenacious competitor and looks to still threaten for a medal.

Jason Tunks has also been looking very good in practices and is looking to break the CWG's record in men's discus. Eric Forshaw is also looking good and hopes to return to his discus form of earlier in the season. Erin Bevins does not compete in men's javelin until the last day of competition and was looking better in competition in Singapore where he threw 73.74m.
