HARRIS COMMITS NEW FUNDING TO SUPPORT ONTARIO ATHLETES

Sept 13 2000

Premier Mike Harris, joined by Finance Minister Ernie Eves, today announced provincial funding for a new foundation to support top junior athletes. The Harris government will spend up to $10 million, matching donations to the new Foundation for Athletes and Sport Training(FAST), which was created by TO-Bid. "Today, most of the athletes who will represent Canada in the future are just starting out," Harris said. "FAST will help them through the transformation from local athletes to Olympic competitors." FAST will contribute to the development of junior athletes between the novice and national levels. The FAST board will be led by athletes and it will ensure that funding goes directly to junior athletes, rather than administration costs. "Our $10 million matching commitment will go a long way to ensure Ontario athletes are at the top of their game," said Eves, who is also Deputy Premier and Chair of the Ontario Olympic Sports Waterfront Development Agency. "We encourage the private sector and other provinces to join us in supporting our young athletes." Harris said that FAST will ensure that the momentum generated by Toronto's 2008 Olympic Bid will benefit amateur sports across the province. "Through FAST, we can leave a meaningful legacy for future generations of young athletes," Harris said. Further information: Premier's Media Office (416) 325-7600
