UK Athletics reveal £5 million plan

Sept 07 2000

By Paul Halford

UK Athletics today announced a £5 million plan to increase participation in the country's most successful major sport.
The federation has launched the 5-year "Fun to Fulfilment" campaign to attract more into competing, officiating, coaching and administrating in the face of growing competition from other activities.
As the country prepares to host the World Championships for the first time in 2005, the plan will try to revitalise the club system and revise the competitions structure. It is also aimed at increasing by at least 15 percent the number of women, members of ethnic minorities and people with disabilities coaching and officiating.
The report outlining the project noted that, while fun-running and other health-related activities were on the rise, there were fewer people becoming involved in athletics competitively. Standards in some events are lower than they were 20 years ago, it stated.
It further highlighted that time spent by schoolchildren in curricular sport has decreased by ten percent in each of the last three decades.
"It sets the agenda for our sport," said UK Athletics Chief Executrive David Moorcroft of the plan. "With a shared vision and an abundance of passion, there is no limit to what athletics in the UK can achieve."
