Canadian athlete tests positive, banned from OlympicsSept 05 2000Globe and Mail Update with Canadian Press Canadian track and field athlete Robin Lyons has been kicked off the Olympic team for testing positive to a banned substance. Ms. Lyons, 23, from Edmonton, was set to travel to the Olympics to compete in hammer throwing. The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport, which administered the drug test, confirmed Tuesday that Robin Lyons, 23, of Edmonton, tested positive for the anabolic steroid norandrosterone, a metabolite of nandrolone, at the Canadian Olympic trails in August. She tested positive for the substance last week, her lawyer said. He said the substance occurs in women naturally, and is higher when women menstruate. Ms. Lyons's "A" sample showed a level of nine nanograms of norandrosterone per millilitre of urine. When a woman has over five nanograms, that is considered illegal, said Victor Lachance, chief executive officer for the centre. Norandrosterone occurs naturally in the body, but most humans would show a level of 0.5., said Mr. Lachance. The highest natural level the CCES has seen in a natural test is 0.8, he said. "It's 10 times higher than what you expect to find normally and five times as to what we consider to be the highest natural level," Mr. Lachance said. Ms. Lyons has not yet asked to have her "B" sample analyzed. v Ms. Lyons's lawyer, Thomas Cooke, discussed the test results at a news conference Tuesday afternoon. A sports doctor, Mauro DiPasquale, spoke at the news conference through telephone. He said that if Ms. Lyons had been injecting performance-enhancing steriods, her levels would have been much higher. v Ms. Lyons set a meet record in women's hammer throw with a toss of 62.70 metres on Aug. 13. She was among the medal hopes for Canada in athletics. With a report from Jill Mahoney Check out the Jumpstart Athletics Canadian National Throws Rankings for complete rankings in the throws.
