20m Barrier Broken; New Canadian Indoor Record.

This weekend at the Nebraska Husker Invitational Brad Snyder broke what many in Canada were beginning to think was an unattainable barrier, 20m in men's shot put. Snyder threw 20.11m to easily win the event and improve upon his previous best. It has been over ten years since Canada has had someone over the 20m barrier but competing in one of the toughest and complete fields of NCAA contenders, Snyder crossed that "unattainable" barrier. And, if anyone had doubts about Snyder becoming a World Class Thrower they certainly don't have now. This Breaks Bruno Pauletto's Canadian Indoor Record of 20.02m established in 1980. Snyder was an olympian in 1996 and is presently ranked number one in the NCAA where he is attending the University of South Carolina. Congratulations to Brad Snyder from all the throwers in Canada.

Junior Lianne Coombe of Laurel Creek Track Club gave herself a big Valentine Day present by throwing 13.47m and winning the York University Invitational women's shot. Coombe who has been looking to achieve more focus, settled down in the four and fifth rounds to throw two personal bests of 13.16m and 13.47m. In the sixth round, she threw 12.88m equaling her previous personal best, which was set at U of T in early January of this year. Coombe's 13.47m also establishes a new LCTC junior women's indoor shot record, surpassing Liz Toman's old indoor LCTC junior mark of 13.32m.

Marie-Josee Le Jour also had a good weekend as she threw 12m75 in the shot at the Ball State Open and avoided the "Friday the 13" jinx by achieving a pb. Her previous personal best was 11.54m. Lejour was pleased with her results and her series was consistent, and in the 12 m range. Lejour also threw 14.46 in the weight, which was just 5 cm off of her pb.

In other news Georgette Reed posted her first indoor result of 15.14m to win the Alberta High Performance women's shot put. Murray Heber, who established a very big pb last weekend of 15.28m, won the men's event with a throw of 14.57m

Queen's: The new CIAU Dream Team?

Does Melody Torcolacci and her Golden Gaels comprise the next CIAU Shot Dream Team? It is certainly appearing so after this past weekends' meet at the Windsor Challenge.

This meet saw the best Canadian shot put action so far this year in the CIAU with 5 of the top 10 throwers competing.

The winning throw was by an American from Saginaw Valley with a toss of 15.13m. This was closely followed by Matt Codrington, presently ranked number one in the CIAU, of Windsor, with a 15.02m throw. Another American rounded out the third spot. Fourth and fifth, were James Osborn - at 14.50m, a 1.04m PB, and Neil Purves with a throw of 14.42m and a 3 cm. PB. Sixth was Windsor's Greg Heubner at 14.39m.

Absent was Antonie Schultz, ranked with a 14.28m effort, who is apparently out with mono. Nevertheless, this was a preview of the OUA and CIAU championships.

Queen's University's 3rd, 4th and 5th spot team members were also in attendance. Mike Knox posted a PB with a toss of 13.59m, this mark was noteable as all of the team members have now broken the 13.00m barrier. With five over 13m, three in the top ten, and 3 of 5 being rookies, Queen's could quite possibly be the dream team of the CIAU!

Another Canadian Record for Russell

Scott Russell is showing no signs of letting up this season as he increased his personal best and recent Canadian Junior Record by almost two feet. Competing in Missouri, he moved his 35lb weight throw up to 19.95 meters (65ft 5 1/2in). In the process, Russell set a meet record( a triangular meet between Kansas, Missouri and Kansas State ) and also bumped up his University of Kansas record. This record is pending ratification by Athletics Canada. Derek Woodske retained his hold on his second place ranking by throwing 18.74 at the McDonald's I meet at the University of Idaho.

Brad Snyder, a Canadian Olympian in 1996, also had a good weekend as he continued to dominate the NCAA as he put up his best throw of the year so far in shot put. Snyder threw 19.63 at an ACC - SEC joint meet in Gainsville Florida. Brad is attending The University of South Carolina and has led the NCAA rankings for the shot put this year.

Liz Toman also produced some respectable results this weekend while competing in the pentathlon. Toman, competing in her first pentathalon of the season won the shot event with a throw of 13.77m! This performance is easily her best indoor multi throw and her second best indoor performance all time after her 14.17m PB last weekend in Boulder. Toman's next multi is in three weeks at the WAC indoor conference Championships. Meanwhile, Nikki Pawluk has qualified for the NJCAA Championships in Weight throw by throwing 36'10" (11.22m) at the McDonald's I meet at the University of Idaho this past weekend.

Provincial Records for Trio

The Annual Sled Dog Indoor Track meet was held on Jan 31/Feb01/98 and provided the opportunity for three women to either break or higher their provincial records in the weight throw. Noreena Bodaglo from the University of manitoba established a Saskatchewan Open record by throwing 15.70m. Karla Johnson of the Saskatoon Track Club established a Saskatchewan record by throwing 14.00m, and Tara Baker of Chinook Track and Field of Alberta (competing for the University of Saskatchewan) established a provincial record of 13.11m. Bodaglo and Baker are now ranked 1 & 2 respectively in the Canada West Universities Athletic Association (CWUAA)

Canadian Record for Fournier

Competing at the Blacksburg Winter Classic on the weekend, Michelle Fournier established a new Canadian Record in women's weight throw. Her throw of 19.45m bested her throw of 18.59 set in Hanover in March of last year. This past summer she also established a Canada Games record of 55.12m enroute to her gold medal. Her performance presently places her third in the NCAA.

Other notable results from the weekend include Liz Toman's 14.17m throw in shot put. On friday January 23 in Denver Colorado, Toman, competing in her first meet of the indoor season and her first for Colorado State University, set a new indoor personal best and new Laurel Creek senior women's indoor shot record, with a toss of 14.17m. The old LCTC record was 13.36m held by Liz when she was a first year junior (set in Windsor '96). Unfortunately due to health reasons, Liz was unable to compete in last year's indoor season, but with this opening competition, it looks like Liz is back to where she left off at the end of the '96 outdoor season! Liz's outdoor best is 14.29m.

Derek Woodske opened his indoor season at North Idaho College with a toss of 18.72m in the 35lb weight throw and 15.20m in the shot-put. Both marks exceed the indoor standards set for the NJCAA indoor nationals wich are to be held in Illinos this March. Woodske has signed an early national letter of intention to attend the University of Wyoming and train with Larry Judge. See related article further down this page.

CanThrow becomes Yahoo pick of the Week

CanThrow was Yahoo's pick of the day for Jan. 20, and a pick of the week for the week Jan 16 to Jan 23. With the site now getting just over 40,000 hits a month it is probably not surprising that it is now one of the highest if not the highest visited throws site on the web. The easy navigation and fast downloads combine with pertinent information, making it a must see for any thrower. "The accolades really should go to everyone who has helped in making this site a success. It couldn't be done without the input of throwers everywhere" say Larry Steinke. He also notes that InCom Corporation's participation and superior Web Hosting services make the whole project a success. "I think the site is only going to get better, especially with a lot more people now making suggestions and providing information and results." says Steinke. "It has become a community and I hope to be able to expand certain areas and to be able to provide bio information, more photos and more technical advice from coaches and athletes everywhere."

SUCCESS Program Initiated

CanThrow is announcing a new SUCCESS program to begin this season. With sponsorship from Aperture Imaging CanThrow is now able to offer a T-Shirt to any Canadian thrower who achieves a personal best by the end of the season or establishes a provincial/national age group record.
