Silver Medal at World Championships for Armstrong

Oct 18 2000

Dylan PodiumDylan Armstrong of Kamloops BC has won the first ever throwing medal for Canada at a World Championships. Competing at the World Junior Championships Dylan threw 67.50 in men's hammer to place second to Apak Esref of Turkey who established a National Junior Record for his country of 69.97. Aaron Fish of Australia was third with 67.44 which came on his last throw.

This ends a fantastic season for Armstrong who established a new National Junior record of 70.66 in July at the National Speed/Power Camp in Flagstaff. The old record of 67.50 was set by Scott Neilson in Regina on August 28 of 1976. That throw also moved Dylan into second spot on the All-time Canadian list surpassing John Stoikos's second spot result of 70.60 set in 1998. Scott Neilson has first spot with a throw of 72.70 which is the Canadian Senior record and was set in 1978 in Seattle.

Indoors Dylan established a new Canadian Junior Weight throw record as well when he threw 20.59 at the Vandal Invitational in February. This surpassed Scott Russel's two year old record of 20.58. Congratulations go out to Dylan Armstrong and his coach Derek Evely on a great year of throwing.
