Diack to be more lenient on drugs issue

Nov 19 1999
Paul Halford

Lamine Diack was voted in as IAAF President yesterday and within hours deviated from the opinions imposed by Primo Nebiolo.

The IAAF council unanimously decided that Diack, should remain in charge until at least the time of the next IAAF congress in 2001.

The Senegalese broke away from Nebiolo's stance on drugs saying, "We started the battle against doping and we continue to lead the struggle. Now the International Olympic Committee and governments are joining forces with us,"

"But some cases are very iffy. Sometimes we will have to be lenient. We have to talk to the athletes, to listen."

Nebiolo's view was that if you test positive, you are guilty, so the news that Diack has a more lenient approach may be welcome to Linford Christie, who should tomorrow have his case reviewed.

The former Olympic champion, who tested positive for nandrolone earlier this year was cleared by UKAthletics but the IAAF will likely refer the case to an arbitration panel.
