IAAF confirms Diack as president until 2001

Nov 18 1999

MONTE CARLO, Monaco (AP) -- Lamine Diack of Senegal today was appointed president of the International Amateur Athletic Federation until 2001, 11 days after the death of longtime leader Primo Nebiolo.

Diack had acted as interim president since the Nov. 7 death of Nebiolo, who had built up almost total control over the IAAF during his 18-year reign.

Diack chaired the IAAF's council meeting which made the unanimous decision and agreed that Istvan Gyulai would continue as IAAF general secretary.

The IAAF decided against calling an extraordinary congress to elect a new president. Its next scheduled congress is at Edmonton on the eve of the 2001 World Championships.

Diack, 66, was appointed senior vice president of the IAAF in 1991, and is honorary president of the Senegalese track and field association.
