Elite Hammer Invitational Set for Next WeekendMay 26 1999On June 5, Kamloops will be hosting the Centennial Hammer Invitational in conjunction with their invitational track meet. This competition will feature 6 invited hammer throwers and each athlete has been over 60m with the hammer. Leading the way will be John Stoikos who has a personal best of 70.60. John has been a member of two Commonwealth Games teams as well as a World Student Games team member. Ian Maplethorpe will also be competing and has a personal best of almost 68 meters. He has represented Canada as a national team member over 12 different times and has been a member of the Commonwealth Games team on 3 separate occasions and his Canada Games record also still stands. Wes Boudreau, a standout at Tennessee, has a personal best of over 68 meters. Boudreau represented Canada as a junior at the Pan American Games. Derek Woodske, who has a personal best of 60.43 in the hammer, is the Canadian record holder in the weight throw with a personal best of 22.79 which was established in the 1999 indoor season. Dylan Armstrong, possibly on of the finest hammer throwing prospects ever in North America will also be throwing. As a juvenile Dylan threw 61.40 with the 16lb hammer but threw 71.36 with the 12lb. This season he has thrown the 12lb hammer 76.58 for a North American High School record and will likely be the favourite going into the Pan American Juniors where another strong contender, Jacob Freeman from the US will also be competing. Dylan also holds the North American weight throw record with the 25lb weight with a throw of 26.65 thrown this past indoor season. The final competitor will be Murray Heber who represented Canada at the Cayman Islands junior dual in 1998 and is presently a first year senior who is ranked first in the NAIA as a member of the University of Alberta Golden Bears. Heber also won the inaugural CIAU weight throw with a record toss of 19.58. This will be one of the finest hammer competitions ever held in Canada and will set the tone for the National Championships to be held later at the end of June.
