Records Fall: Another Great Throws Weekend for Canadians

Another great weekend of throws for Canadian Throws as two more Canadian records fell and a number of personal bests were seen. Starting out the weekend Jason Tunks broke his month old discus record of 67.74m by throwing 67.88m. Tunks's series was f,66.26,64.87,65.79,f,67.88. He had warmups over 70m but never found his rythmn once the competition began but his consistency so far this season is a very good sign for the World Cup and Commonwealth Games.

Also establishing a new Canadian record of the junior variety was Scott Russell. Russell threw a huge personal best of 75.46m to not only set a Canadian junior record but won the Big 12 Championships as well. He also placed 3rd in Hammer with 57.74m, 10th in Discus with 49.08m and 9th in shot with 16.35m to cap a successful weekend. Nils Olivetto also competed at the Big 12 Championships and placed 4th in the hammer with 56.86

At the National Junior College Championships Derek Woodske repeated as National Champion in the men's hammer when he threw 57.99m This capped off a successful season for woodske as he won the indoor weight title as well. Woodske is now off to Wyoming where he will be coached by Larry Judge. Jason Gervais also won at the National Junior College Championships when he placed first in the discus with a throw of 52.40, well below his season best. He also finished second in hammer with a throw of 53.36m and 5th in Shot with a throw of 15.65m

In other weekend results Nicole Chimko topped his previous discus and javelin pb's at the Minnesota last chance meet. She continued her hold on the Foot Locker National Throws Rankings in discus and javelin when she threw 52.52m and 53.66m respectively. Her javelin mark automatically qualified her for the NCAA champs. Brad Snyder continued his undefeated streak in the shot when he threw 20.24m at the Clemson Orange & Purple Classic. John Stoikos, competing in the hammer at the same event also finished 1st with a toss of 67.52m. Ruth Conlon improved upon her previous best of 54.02m by throwing 56.18m at the Akron facility where the MAC Championships will be held next week. At the Bill Hayes Invitational in Indiana, Randy Johnson won the javelin with a throw of 64.30m during his first meet back after straining his elbow a month ago. At the Len Paddock Invitational at Ferry Field in Ann Arbor Michigan, Eric Forshaw won the discus with a throw of 55.32m while Andrew McDonaugh, who is just starting back after injuries, won the javelin with a throw of 62.56m. Also competing at this meet and finishing fourth was Aaron Larson who threw 16.22m

On the local scene where high school meets are gearing up for their season Nicole Clarke who leads the Foot Locker National Throws Rankings Junior Shot Put began her quest for an OFSAA title. At her first qualifying meet for OFSAA at the Kingston Area Secondary School Athletic Association Championships KASSAA, that were held at Richardson Stadium at Queen's University, she won three gold medals, in the shot, discus and hammer. She threw 38.09m in discus, 29.58m in javelin and 13.22m in the shot which was a new meet record by almost two meters. The previous record was 11.86m. She improved on the record on four of her six throws. She will now compete at the Eastern Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association Championships EOSSAA, next Wednesday in Ottawa at the Terry Fox Centre.
