National Best for SnyderMay 11 1999On Friday night, May 7, 1999, Trevor Snyder of the St. Joseph's High School Track and Field Team set a new Ontario record for Juveniles in the javelin throw with a toss of 65.58 metres. Athletics Canada does not keep records for age groups below junior but this mark would be considered a National best for juveniles. Snyder who was competing in the 50th edition of the Kennedy Relays, beat the old meet record on all six of his trials, with a very impressive series of 58.60, 62.20, 61.35, 57.92, 62.20 and finally 65.58. This is the third meet in a row where Snyder has improved upon his personal best. The old Ontario Juvenile record of 64.40 was set by Mike Demunnik in 1990. Snyder who is presently 16 years old, will be 17 next month. He also competes at the club level for the Windsor Legion Track & Field Club. Meanwhile, at the Carolina Classic last weekend at North Carolina, Trevor's older brother Brad finished second in the shot put to CJ Hunter, better known as Marion Jones' husband. Snyder threw 20.29 . It is the first time Snyder hasn't won a collegiate competition since the NCAA Indoor Championships in 1997, but he is still undefeated as a collegiate because Hunter is a non-collegiate athlete. Hunter is no slouch with the shot put as he has the world's best mark in 1999 at 70 4 1/4 and is the only shot putter in the world to throw over 70 feet this year. He recently defeated Olympic champion John Godina at the Mount Sac Relays. He was the Indoor USA champion in 1994 and the outdoor champion in 1995. A 1996 Olympian, he has competed at a number of world championships and was ranked No. 4 in the world last year. At the same meet Michelle Fournier moved up her personal best in the women's hammer when she threw 61.47 and extended her lead in the Fairlee National Throws Rankings. This throw is the second farthest ever by a Canadian woman and is Fournier's second time over the coveted 200 foot mark. Fournier also won the shot with a throw of 14.62. At the Lethbridge Spring Meet hosted by the Foremost and Lethbridge Track Club's, two provincial best mark's were established in women's hammer. Patti Pilsner-Steinke of the Chinook Track Club made her first foray past the 60m mark with a throw of 60.85 which establishes a new personal best and Alberta record. Finishing second was club mate Carla Pavan who extended her personal best to 51.87 and in third place was another Chinook athlete Tara Baker who tossed 47.67. Erin Riste, a member of the Caltaf club, also established a provincial record with her throw of 38.67. This mark bettered Riste's week old provincial junior record of 36.76, established at the New Balance Twilight series. In men's discus Geoff Dolan topped the field with a throw of 43.76 while decathlete Greg Urbanczyk finished second with a throw of 39.22. In Colorado Springs where the University of Wyoming team travelled,Jason Gervais, presently redshirting the outdoor season, won the shot put with a throw of 18.29 and the discus with a throw of 56.66. Robin Lyons also won both her events as she threw 59.11 in hammer and 51.72 in discus. Marie Lejour established a school record with the new javelin when she tossed 40.64 to win the women's javelin. At the Cardinal Invitational, Liz Toman finished third in women's discus with a throw of 49.30 and at the Al Campbell Invitational Ruth Conlon won the women's hammer with a throw of 54.20 and finished sixth in discus with a throw of 39.06. At the Minnesota Open at Bierman Track and Field Stadium in Minneapolis, Nicole Chimko finished second in the women's discus with a throw of 51.36 and won the javelin with a throw of 51.46. At North Texas, Jason Tunks finished second to his old teammate from MSU, Alex Tammert. Tunks threw 64.74 while Tammert threw 66.93. At the Air Force meet, Andrew McDonagh threw 68.93 to win the meet and finally, at the Review Kajaks High School Track & Field Meet, Caroline Wittrin improved upon her season's best when she won the women's hammer with a toss of 61.02 If you have news, results or info please let us know by using our submission form or emailing Larry Steinke [ MEET INFORMATION ] [ ANALYSIS & TIPS ] [ THROWS ARTICLES ] [ INTERVIEWS ] [ RECORDS ] [ RESULTS ] [ CLASSIFIEDS ] [ HOT LINK ARCHIVE ] [ DISCUSSION FORUM ] [ SUBMISSIONS ] [ THROWERS QUIZ ] [ GUESTBOOK ] | ||
