Canadian Records Dominate Weekend of Throws Results

A pair of Canadian records and a large number of personal best dominated the past weekend of throws results. Trevor Snyder of the Windsor Legion Track Club started the weekend with a Canadian Intersholastic Record in the javelin when he threw 69.97 at the Kennedy Relays. Snyder has started the season where he left off last summer and has been consistently in the 69m range. The CanThrow web site is now posting Canadian High School rankings and are looking for high school throws results from across the country.

The other Canadian record came on the women's side when Robin Lyons, a senior at Wyoming, threw the ball and chain out to a distance of 64.48. Last week Lyons, from Panoka Alberta, was named the Mountain West Conferences Female Athlete of the Week when she won the discus and finished second in the hammer at the Drake Relays. She threw her Canadian record at the Don Kirby Invitational, held in Albuquerque, N.M.. Lyons allso was the top collegiate placer in the discus with a throw of 51.05. Jason Gervais, a junior at Wyoming, was named the McLeodUSA Mountain West Conference Male Athlete of the week this week. Gervais, a native of Timmons, Ontario, earned three first-place finishes at the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque last weekend. In the process, he broke his own school record, established a season-high and eclipsed a stadium record. Gervais earned first in the shot put with a mark of 19.49, which broke his own school record. In the hammer throw, he had a throw of 66.22, which is a season-high and the best in his conference by more than eight feet. Gervais finished his day with a first-place finish in the discus with a mark of 62.03, a New Mexico Track and Field Stadium record.

Garret Collier, a junior at Berkeley, won the 106th Big Meet -- Cal versus Stanford hammer with a personal best of 62.04. He also finished second in the discus with a toss of 52.04. Jennifer Joyce threw 61.06 in the hammer and 48.22 in the discus to finish first and second respectively to help the Berkeley point total.

National leader in both the NCAA and Canadian javelin rankings, Scott Russell extended his perfect seasonal record to 6-0 as he floated the spear out to 71.68 at the Life College meet. Although the throw was not close to his early season form he is throwing consistantly and looks strong going into the last few weeks of NCAA competition. Still with javelin, Canadian Dave Matson won the Penn State open when threw 67.08 in javelin to pace the event. Randy Johnson was 6th with 62.60 while Tim Bloomfiled was 11th with 58.08. All three athletes belong to Club SISU of Toronto.

In Iowa, Nicole Chimko helped Minnesota to a win at the five-team Iowa Twilight Invitational on Saturday. Minnesota won eight of nineteen events and swept four throwing events while Chimko won both the discus and the javelin with throws of 50.80 and 49.23 respectively.

At the University of Montana Open a number of Canadian athletes opened their competitive season. Murray Herber of the University of Alberta reached the top of the NAIA rankings when threw 56.20 to finish second behind Ian Maplethorpe of Leduc, last summers national champion, who heaved 61.90. Heber then went on to win the discus with a toss of 47.40. Erin Riste of the Chinook Track and Field Club in Lethbridge jumped to the top of the Canadian Junior rankings in women's hammer when she won the meet with a throw of 53.78. The action then moved to the Foremost Spring Meet where Maplethorpe won the hammer with a toss of 61.87. Heber again finished second with a throw of 54.96. In women's action, Patti Pilsner-Steinke opened her season with a throw of 60.66 in hammer followed by her teammate Carla Pavan who threw 56.54. Sonya Vatcher, also of Chinook finished third. Riste also won the junior women's hammer at the event with a toss of 52.92.
