CANADIAN RECORDS SET TONE FOR UPCOMING OUTDOOR SEASON

May 4 2003

If the early season flurry of Canadian records are any indication it could be a great outdoor season for Canuck throwers and a continuation of an upswing in the quality of throws results in Canada in recent years.

Congrats to eighteen-year-old Krista Woodward of New Westminster, B.C. who recently set new national records in the womenÕs javelin event. Currently a freshman at the University of Georgia, Woodward broke the record in both age classes with a throw of 51.61m, beating the previous senior record of 51.31m by 30 cm. The junior record was 50.89m. Along with establishing the record, Krista finished second in the Sea Ray Relay at the University of Tennessee which took place the weekend of April 12-13. Dominique Bilodeau of the University of Sherbrooke, now being coached by Bill Heikkila of Ottawa Lions, was third in the competition with a season opener of 50.46.

Jim Steacy, a freshman at the University of Lethbridge and a member of the Chinook Track and Field club also opened his outdoor season by breaking his Canadian and North American junior record in hammer with a toss of 70.34. Steacy had established a new Canadian junior record in men's weight throw with a throw of 20.72 earlier in the indoor season.

Derek Woodske improved his personal best in hammer to 70.56 to go over the 70m barrier for the first time in his career and Dylan Armstrong at Mt. Sac threw 71.51 to improve his personal best.

Another notable Canadian performance this season came from Trevor Snyder of Windsor, ON. A sophomore at the University of Georgia, Snyder won the men's invitational javelin at the Sea Ray Relays with a new personal best of 74.76m. His result is now the second farthest throw to date in the NCAA season.
