Stellar weekend for Russell and WoodskeMarch 09/98On the heels of what was a great weekend Scott Russell and Derek Woodske had outstanding performace in Men's Weight Throw. Russell threw 20.42 to up his own Canadian Junior Record set earlier in the season. Before the weekend began he was sitting 16th and likely out of a spot at the NCAA Championships. Competing in Ames Iowa in a last chance qualifier Russell rose to the occassion and beat his previous personal best of 19.95m and moved in to 6th place in the NCAA rankings and assured himself of a spot at the championships. He also establihsed a Kansas record, a meet record and is now ranked number one in the World in Junior Men's Weight Throw. Presently he also sits 6th in the World Junior Shot Put rankings with a throw of 16.37m Not to be outdone, Derek Woodske also had a great weekend. Woodske, who signed with Wyoming earlier in the year also rose to the occassion and won the National Junior Colleges Athletic Association (NJCAA) Championships. Woodske threw 18.49m (60'-8") to win the meet and although it was not a personal best, established a new Championship record. Woodske also had a foul in the fourth round that went out over 20m. "If I could only have that one back!" Woodske says. The old meet record was 16.28m (53' 5"). Woodske is now gearing up for the outdoor season which begin next weekend for him. Nicole Chimko of Calgary Alberta, competing for University of Minnesota, took over the number one spot in the Canadian women's shot put rankings by throwing 15.24m. If her rankings stands it will be the first time in almost 10 years that someone other than Georgette Reed held the top spot in this event.
