Snyder Continues NCAA Dominance

Brad Snyder continued his dominance in the NCAA with his win this past weekend at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The South Carolina Sophomore won the shot put event with a toss of 20.22m to break the 20m mark for the third consecutive weekend. Adam Nelson, a senior at Dartmouth finished second with 19.86m followed by junior John Davis of Houston with a mark of 19.68m.

Scott Russell also had a very successful weekend as he took the silver medal at the NCAA Championships. His throw of 20.58 also established a Canadian Junior Indoor record in the Weight Throw for the fourth time this season. Russell was part of a freshman one two punch as freshman Libor Chargreitag of Southern Methodist won the event with a mark of 21.23m. Thrid spot was taken by senior Scott Warren of Nebraska.

Michelle Fournier, a junior at South Carolina only managed a 12th place finish in the women's weight throw with a toss of 18.44.

At the CIAU Championships the University of Windsor dominated the throws events as both the men's and women's shot put events were won by athletes from this institution. Matt Codrington won the men's event with a throw of 15.92m. Suzanne Gavinne won the women's event with a mark of 14.00m for a season's best. Greg Heubner increased his season's best as well by taking the silver medal in the men's event with a throw of 15.27m. Winning the bronze was Paul Drogaris of McGill with a throw of 14.88m. Rounding out the women's medal's were Mary Ann Phillips of Western with a toss of 13.80m for silver and the bronze was won by Christa Goebel of York with a throw of 13.65.

While this weekend marked the finish of the indoor season with both the NCAA and CIAU indoor championships it also marked the beginning of the outdoor season for some as a couple of Canadians took advantage of the early spring weather to establish some early season marks. Derek Woodske improved upon his personal bests from last season by opening with marks of 57.87m and 46.81m in Hammer and Discus respectively. Randy Johnson started out the season well also as he set a new meet record while competing at the Southern Mississippi Invitational with a throw of 63.32m in the men's javelin.
