Mar. 08 1999

Brad Snyder (South Carolina) defended his NCAA indoor shot title with a throw of 19.80 meters (64-11.50), followed by Iowa State's Jamie Beyer at 19.53 meters (64-1). Idaho's Joachim Olsen finished third at 19.41 meters (63-8), while John Davis of Houston slipped one place from last year with his throw of 19.25 (63-2). In fifth-place was Marcus Clavelle of Arkansas at 19.08 meters (62-7.25). Snyder remains undefeated in two indoor seasons of NCAA shot and looks to do the same in the outdoor season.

In the men's weight throw, pre-championships co-favourite Derek Woodske still suffering from an injury from two weeks ago managed eleventh spot with 20.12m. Scott Russell was fifth with 21.66m and Jason Gervais was eigth with a personal best of 21.14m. Defending champion Libor Charfreitag edged out Kevin Mannon (the other pre championships co-favourite) of Wyoming to win the event. Charfreitag threw 22.03 to Mannon's 22.00m in what was a hotly contested event. In third was Tom Barrett of Illinois State.

In the women's weight, second ranked Robin Lyons suffering from a sprained ankle, managed a sixth place finish with 19.40m while Michelle Fournier finished seventh with 19.12m. Winning the event was Toyinda Smith of Purdue with 20.95m. Second and third were Florence Ezeh and Seilala Sua with 20.87 and 20.52 respectively.

At the Alberta Provincial Indoor Championships, Ian Maplethorpe held off the hot hand of Murray Heber who has improved on his season's best in the weight every weekend he has competed this season. Heber opened the competition with a personal best of 19.31m in the first round to establish an Alberta under 20 record. Maplethorpe then responded with a second round throw with a new provincial record and a personal best of 19.77m. All of Maplethorpes recorded throws were over 19m and was one of the best series he has compiled Geoff Dolan finished in third place. Heber is now an overwhelming favourite to win the CIAU championships in weight.

At the OUA championships, Tina McDonald re-established herself as the favourite for next weekend's CIAU shot championships by establishing a personal best of 15.43m. This also places McDonald at the top of the Fairlee National Throws Rankings in women's shot. Courtney Bovin was second with 13.36m and Heather Brand was third with 12.97m. On the men's side, Greg Heubner won the event with a throw of 15.26m while Antonie Scholtz was second with 14.74m. In third was Stephen Lemieux with 14.09m.
