Heber Establishes New Canada West Record

Murray Heber dominated the Canada West weight throw and will go into the CIAU championships with the top seed. Heber threw 18.76m to establish a new personal best and Canada West record. The old record of 17.77m was set by Mark Lowe of Saskatchewan in 1994. Heber is very quickly giving the CIAU weight throw credibility in it's first year as an event. Dave Gosnell of the University of Calgary was second with 14.85m and in third was Grant Chapman of the University of Alberta with 13.54m. In women's shot, Karla Johnson established a new personal best enroute to winning the shot. Her throw of 13.50m bettered Noreena Bodaglo of Manitoba's throw of 13.05m. In third was Suzanne Pitcher of the University of Alberta with a throw of 12.35m.

At the Quebec Provincial Championships, first year junior, Nathalie Thenor won the open weight throw with 16.61m. Lianne Coombe of the Laurel Creek Track Club of Ontario was second with a personal best throw of 15.84m and in third was Veronique Valle with a toss of 9.77m. Coombe also won the shot with a throw of 13.77m while Dominique Bilodeau was second with 13.22m and Natalie Thenor was third with 12.79m. On the men's side, Paul Drogaris won the men's shot with a throw of 15.80m while France Gagne was second with 12.93m. In weight, Frank Baert won with 14.94. Emil Muller was second with 14.73m and third was Steve Bedard with 14.34m.

At the Nike University of Toronto Last Chance Qualifier a closely fought battle in the weight produced a huge personal best for Tina McDonald. Tina, competing for the University of Toronto, edged out Nicole Clarke of Queen's for top spot with a throw of 16.03m. Clarke, also establishing a personal best, threw 15.97m to finish second. Jennifer Geenaway finished third with a throw of 12.11m. In women's shot, Suzanne Gavine led the way with a put of 13.42m. Nicole Clarke was second with 12.79m and Tanya Sawyers was third with 12.12m.

In men's action, Satkaran Cheema won the shot with a throw of 14.88m. Mike Throne of Queen's was second with 13.70m, and third was Dennis Beuerman of Western with 13.60m. In weight, Kevin Harrison won with a throw of 13.45m. Michael Melaney of QUeens was second with 12.50m and third was Bill Leicht with 12.32m.

At the Mid American Conference Championships Ruth Conlon, competing for Buffalo, threw 16.83m to finish 4th in women's weight throw. Aaron Larson, competing in men's shot for Western Michigan also finished fourth with a season's best of 16.35m.
