Mate dominates, Snyder pb's

June 03 1999

Fournier Throws to NCAA Silver
Auburn freshman Gabor Mate threw the discus 61.60 (202-1) to claim the NCAA title over SMU freshman Janus Robberts, who threw 60.62 (198-11). Robberts started off well by getting his best toss on his opening throw. Mate managed to take the lead with a second round throw of 61.20 and then improved his winning mark on his final throw. Nick Petrucci of Northern Arizona's finished third at 59.57 (195-5), followed by Houston's John Davis at 59.41 (194-11), UCLA's Luke Sullivan at 59.37 (194-9) and Auburn freshman Reedus Thurmond at 59.31 (194-7). Brad Snyder, using the discus as a warm up threw a personal best of 58.64 (192-5).

Snyder won the shot put at the SEC Championships two weeks ago to win his eighth SEC title (seven shot put, one discus). Brad has also won every collegiate competition he has entered since the 1997 Indoor Championships, where he finished third with a bad back.

But, what about the NCAAs? He is looking for his fourth shot put title in a row (1998 NCAAIndoor and Outdoor, 1999 Indoor) and with this feat in mind, he joins some elite company. Snyder joins four other women in search of their fourth title in a row at NCAAs. Snyder has also won five Canadian Shot Put National titles and was a member of the 1997 World Team and 1996 Olympic Team and will be competing later in June to make a spot on the World Championships team as well as the Pan American team.

Michelle Fournier closed out her collegiate career with a personal best and Canadian record while narrowly missing keeping the "Streak" alive. South Carolina had won the last three NCAA hammer titles - in fact, they are the only school to win all the hammer titles (Dawn Ellerbe, 1996 and '97; Lisa Misipeka, 1998). This would have been enough to put the pressure on Fournier to keep the streak alive but she kept her composure and threw her best of 62.91 in the last round. Going into the championships she was ranked fourth and she had finished eighth here last year.

"I didn't feel a lot of pressure with Dawn and Lisa winning the title before. I felt their support more. They both wished me luck and that felt good," said Fournier. (on throwing a personal best on her last throw?): "I knew I still had a lot in me because my previous best of the day didn't feel right. I knew this was my last chance to show what I had at NCAAs. This is one my best moments in athletics so well. It's great to have big performances at little meets, but it's awesome to have big performances at meets like this. It's a great high. I am also excited about the points I scored for the team. It's a great start."

Florence Ezeh of SMU won the event with a toss of 63.14 which was thrown in the preliminary rounds. Renetta Seiler of Kansas State also threw a preliminary round throw of 61.97 which was good enough for third spot. Finishing in fourth place was Robin Lyons of Wyoming with a toss of 60.65. Jennifer Joyce, the third Canadian competing in women's hammer threw 56.02. Fournier, a native of Pierrefonds, Quebec, won the SEC title three weeks ago and is a two-time Academic All-American.
