Armstrong Reclaims North American Record

June 14 1999

North American Hammer Record
for Armstrong
Dylan Armstrong reclaimed his North American High School Hammer record this past weekend at the the prestigious Golden West meet in Sacramento. Earlier in the season Dylan had thrown 76.58 but Jacob Freeman, a senior at Bishop Hendricken in Warwick Rhode Island threw 77.19 only weeks later to move the record back to the U.S.. At the Golden West on the weekend Armstrong threw out a monster toss of 78.69 with the 12lb implement to bring it back across the 49th parallel and handily win the event over Lucais MacKay of Hughson CA who threw 59.92 and Clay Olson of Gilbert AZ who finished third with a toss of 54.56. Dylan later threw 17.97 in the shot and 58.78 in discus to finish fourth in both events.

Last weekend, Armstrong threw 64.86 with the 16lb implement to finish second to John Stoikos at the Centennial Hammer event in Kamloops. This throw moved him into seventh spot in the world junior rankings and makes him a co-favourite going into the Pan American Junior Championships where he will face Jacob Freeman. Freeman has a toss of 65.89 which he set at the 1999 Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania that set a new U.S. high school and junior national record. The old high school record belonged to Manny Silverio of North Bergen NJ and was 61.80 while the old national junior record belonged to Kevin McMahon and was established while attending Georgetown University and was a toss of 64.12 thrown in 1991 in Spokane WA. There is a strong chance that Armstrong will also remove the Canadian Junior record with the 16lb before his years as a junior are finished. That record stands at 67.50 and was set by Scott Neilson in Regina during the summer of 1976. On the women's side, Carol Stevenson threw 52.04 to complete the Canadian hammer sweep at the Golden West Invitaional while Canadians Lara Peters and Jennifer Padrinao were fourth and fifth respectively with throws of 45.91 and 45.11

At the Kitchener Record Invitaional Erin Bevans established a season's best of 75.00 to finish second in the men's javelin. First place finisher was Tom Petranoff of the U.S. with a new World Masters Record and meet record of 76.91. Petranoff is a four time world record holder, three as an open athlete and now as a masters athlete. Finishing third was Scott Russell while in fourth place was juvenile Trevor Snyder who threw over 65m for the fifth time. Snyder has been named to the World Youth Championships team which will compete in Poland in July. Watch here for more information on this as it becomes available.
