Great Weekend of Throws at OFSAA and NCAA ChampionshipsJune 8 1998Despite the cold and dampness it was a great weekend of throws at OFSAA as a number personal bests were set and a great meet was had by all. As anticipated, Vicki Webb won the senior javelin in the third round with a throw of 44.32m but really put the icing on the cake in the fifth round when she uncorked a 46.20m throw to win by almost 3 meters. In this competition, Vicki had 4 of her life time best throws (#2,3, 6, 8 and 17) and is a real sign that, Vicki is ready to establish her self as a 44 to 47m thrower and get ready for the next step up. (41.28, F, 44.32, 43.78, 46.20, 43.90). Second place went to Andrea Bulat 43.94m (41.54, F, 39.48, 43.94, 38.32., 38.36) and third to Denna Zelinka with a PB of 43.13m (39.50, 37.02, 43.00, 40.24, 43.13, 40.58). This keeps alive his unbeaten streak for the 1998 season. Snyder also finished 8th in Discus with a toss of 57.10m. Meanwhile, Nicole Chimko, in her first appearance at the NCAA championships, finished third in women's javelin with a throw of 53.92. Chimko's throw was the same as second place finisher Oliva Mckoy but Mckoy had the better second best throw to take second place. Windy Dean of Southern Methodist won the javelin with a mark of 56.28 Chimko, who won the 1998 Big Ten javelin and discus titles two weeks ago, became the fourth University of Minnesota woman to earn All-America honors in the javelin during the 1990s. Tanya Simonsen placed second in the javelin in 1996; Heather Berlin placed second in 1995 and third in 1993; and Decia Agnew placed fourth in 1991. Other throws results by Canadians at the NCAA Champs included Scott Russell in javelin - 13th 68.22m, Wes Boudreau in hammer - 10th 65.70, and Michelle Fournier in hammer- 8th 58.16m. In other weekend results at the Rocky Mountain relays Tara Baker upped her personal best in women's hammer by throwing 44.26 while finishing third. Carla Pavan upped her seasonal best to 47.32m finishing second and Patti Pilsner-Steinke threw 58.02m to win the competition. Erin Riste of Caltaf had a personal best in the juvenile women's hammer and won the competition with a throw of 31.04m In men's hammer Ian Maplethorpe won with a throw of 62.36 and Murray Heber finished second with 50.76 while Dale Janzen finished third with a throw of 43.82m. In men's javelin Larry Steinke entered fourth place in the Foot Locker National Throws Rankings by winning the javelin with a throw of 67.97m for his first meet of the season. Andrew Baxter finished second with 51.26 and Dale Janzen was third with 46.50m.
