Ancient shot put record is history

June 02 2000

LA SALLE, Ont. -- After 19 years, the midget girls shot put record finally has been broken.

Defending provincial champion Sultana Frizell of Perth and District Collegiate smashed Joanne Rothery's 1981 OFSAA record (12.25 metres) on all four tosses she had -- her longest being 13.61 metres -- at Sandwich S.S. yesterday at the OFSAA championships.

Rothery, who went to W.C. Kennedy in Windsor, was on hand as an official.

"I am happy she broke the record -- I had it for 19 years and it was time for someone else to take it," said the 34-year-old Rothery.

Northview's Stephanie Hanson, of North York, won the silver medal (11.09) despite picking up the sport only a few months ago.

"I came up short of my personal best (11.40)," Hanson, 15, said. "I think there is room to improve."
