New Alberta Provincial Record for Pilsner-Steinke

June 1 1998

Patti Pilsner-Steinke set a new provincial record in women's hammer when she threw the second farthest ever by a Canadian women at the New Balance Twilight Series in Calgary on May 31. She threw 58.62m to again surpass the Commonwealth Games minimum standard and came within 70cm of the Canadian Record established by Caroline Wittrin earlier in the season. She also regained second place in the Foot Locker National Throws Rankings behind Wittrin. This is the fourth consecutive weekend Pilsner-Steinke has improved upon her Alberta record. Sue Dandenault opened her discus season in Brandon this weekend with a toss of 49.00m and Noreena Badaglo also opened her discus season with a 44.02m.

In high school results Jennifer Joyce succefully defended her BC provincial hammer title with a throw of 50.61m but newcomer Carol Stevenson closed in with a 48.30 to finish second. Third was Roxana Hutana with a toss of 45.87

At the SouthWestern Ontario High School Championships - May 29/30th, 1998, St. Thomas, Ontario Vicki Webb of LCTC threw a Javelin PB to win this championship.

A great competition! Finally being able to throw off a runway, instead of grass the senior women's javelin was an exciting competition to watch. Not only did it have the defending OFSSA Champion (Andrea Bulat), but several of the best nationally ranked junior women javelin throwers in the country.

The competition began with a bang as Denna Zelinka and Klye Lyon, both of London Western, started off with 41 and a high 39m throws respectively. In the second round, Vicki Webb (LCTC) answered after her first round foul, with her second best personal throw ever of 43.42m. This throw would stand as the leader only until the very next round, when the defending meet and Ofssa Champion, Andrea Bulat of Windsor, threw 44.18m to take the lead.

In the fourth round, Webb answered Bulat's throw by matching it to the centimetre with a throw of 44.18m, a personal best for Webb, out throwing her old PB of 43.84m. In the final round Webb put the icing on the cake and added almost three metres to her best while throwing 46.60m.
