Snyder, Wittrin, Win Bronze at Pan Am Games

Brad Snyder and Caroline Wittrin both won bronze medals at the Pan Am Games this week. Wittrin led off with her 61.28 throw in the final round that put her into the bronze medal position. Dawn Ellerbe of the USA won with a toss of 65.36 while Yipsi Moreno of Cuba was second with 63.03. In men's shot put, Snyder threw 18.74 to win his bronze medal while Jamie Beyer of the USA threw 18.95 to win silver and Brad Mears of the USA won the gold with a toss of 19.93. Jason Tunks, using shot as a warm-up for discus later in the week, finished fifth with a toss of 17.66. In other Canadian results, Erin Bevans finished seventh with 68.78 in men's javelin and John Stoikos finished fourth with 67.18 in men's hammer. Noteworthy in men's hammer was the performance of Lance Deal of the USA. Deal broke the 20 year old Canadian open record that Sergey Litvinov established in August of 1979 at the world cup in Montreal. Litvinov threw 78.70 to win the meet and that mark had stood for 20 years.Check out the full results of the 1999 Pan Am Games

In other results Trevor Snyder has continued his impressive season with two more Canadian records. His first one came in the qualification round of the World Youth Championships in Bydgoszcz Poland when he threw 75.99 with the 700gm javelin. He later finished seventh in the final with a toss of 72.94. Check out the full results of the first World Youth Championships. This past weekend he then moved the Canadian/Ontario juvenile record with the 800gm javelin to 68.25 at the Ontario Midget/Junior Championships which were held in Sarnia Ontario. He had a great series that went as follows
67.63, 64.04, 65.69, 65.39, 67.60, 68.25
Snyder will have another shot at upping this record when he competes at the OTFA Juvenile/Senior Championships on Augst 6,7,8 and then again at the Legion National Championships.

At the Alberta Midget/Juvenile/Junior/Senior Championships in Calgary this past weekend Erin Riste of Caltaf, regained her provincial junior record in women's hammer when she threw 42.59 to win the event. Jennifer Brown, who held the old record of 41.32 was second with a toss of 38.96. Riste also won the junior women's discus while Brown was second. Georgette Reed was also a double winner as she topped the field in both the shot and discus with marks of 16.06 and 46.08 respectively. In Senior Women's Hammer, the Chinook Track Club swept the top three spots with Patti Pilsner-Steinke, Carla Pavan, and Tara Baker. This was the third year in which they had done so.

In men's action, Ian Maplethorpe won his 14th consecutive provincial championships with a toss of 65.37. Maplethorpe was also third in discus with a toss of 41.66 while Chris Watson won the event at 45.93. Murray Heber was second with 43.69. In javelin, Larry Steinke competed in his first and only meet of the season and won the event with a toss of 70.27. Second to his coach was Andrew Baxter of the Chinook Track Club while Ryan Thompson was third.
