Throws deemed a success at the Foot Locker/Record International

July17 1998

The throws were deemed a success at the Foot Locker /Record International track meet Saturday night July 4th. In its first year of hosting the throwing events, both meet directors, athletes and the fans in the stands all enjoyed the tightly contested throwing events.

Weather during the invitational events cooperated. It was mild with a good head wind, after a day of scattered showers through out the day.

Men's Invitational Discus
All the Inviational throwing events had their own excitment, but the men's discus lead the way with four personal bests and four seasonal best set by the competitors.

Women's Invitational Javelin
Women's javelin featured the defending Canadian Champion and the cuurrent #2 ranked thrower in the country. But it was #1 ranked junior thrower Vicki Webb that came away with the win to continue her unbeaten season. Placing fourth was Andrea Bulat who recently signed with Kansas.

Men's Invitational Javelin
This event was plagued with a few late scratches due to injuries and illness. Marty Withers recent Masrter record holder withdrew due to illness, Randy Johnson tender elbow and Richard Parkinson back spasms. Despite these withdrawls, the event picked up a couple of throwers from the Burlington TC and the Burlington TC came away with a PB! The fans who weren't use to seeing the javelin were in for a treat when Scott Russell opened up with a 71.06. Unfortunatelyfor the meet and the fan, Erin Bevans, 3 time Canadian Champion and new Canadian Record holder had to withdraw after the second round due to a strained right calf, but not before throwing 72.52m which hung to win the event.
