Russell, Woodske Lead Great Canadian Weekend

What became the Scott Russell and Derek Woodske show last indoor season appears to be continuing this indoor season. Both athletes led a strong Canadian showing over the weekend by establishing personal bests and increasing their rankings in the NCAA Weight Throw. Both athletes have also moved within striking distance of the Canadian record of 21.78m established by Scott Nielson in 1979. Russell moved into fourth place in the NCAA rankings and took over top spot in the Fairlee Fruit Juice Ltd. National Throws Rankings when he threw 21.39m at the Mercantile Bank Invitational. This meet was hosted by the University of Northern Iowa. Russell also finished third in the shot with a throw of 17.18m

Woodske, throwing at the Air Force Classic, finished ahead of top ranked Kevin Mannon with a toss of 21.02 to win the event. This throw moved him into fifth place in the NCAA rankings and second in the Fairlee Fruit Juice Ltd. National Throws Rankings At the same meet, Robin Lyons continued her winning ways as she heaved out a 19.49m to win the weight throw. She also finished second in the shot with 14.63 which keeps her atop both throws events in the Fairlee Fruit Juice Ltd. National Throws Rankings. Finishing third and establishing a personal best was Liz Toman. Toman has taken to focusing only on the throws after a promising stint in the combined events and has changed to the rotational style of throwing for shot. She threw 14.55 to move into second in the Fairlee Fruit Juice Ltd. National Throws Rankings In the men's shot at this meet Jason Gervais also set a personal best in the shot when he tossed out an 18.04 to move into 11th spot in the NCAA rankings and second in the Fairlee Fruit Juice Ltd. At the ACC/SEC Challenge two Candians also led the way as Brad Snyder opened his collegiate season and Michelle Fournier, who has been hampered by injuries, also made her 1999 collegiate debut. Brad Snyder moved into second place in the NCAA shot rankings with a throw of 19.35m and took over sole position of first place in the Fairlee Fruit Juice Ltd. National Throws Rankings. Snyder's performance also helped launch the South Carolina men's track and field team the No. 2 spot in the national Trackwire poll. Meanwhile Fournier moved into third place in the NCAA women's weight throw with a toss of 19.65 which bettered her 1998 Canadian record but still sits in second place in the Fairlee Fruit Juice Ltd. National Throws Rankings behind Lyon's record toss of 20.78m

At the the McDonalds Invite at the University of Idaho Joe Woodske threw the 35lb weight out to 14.78m to establish a personal best in the event in only his second meet. In Minnesota Nicole Chimko finished fourth in the shot with a throw of 13.99m to help lead the Golden Gophers over Marquette at the Minnesota Fieldhouse.

While the University of Windsor was competing at the Findlay Invitational in Findlay Ohio, Courtney Bovin threw a season best 13.35m in shot to finish fourth while Tanya Sawyers also had a season's best in finishing fifth with a toss of 13.16m. Marianne Jeney also qualified for the final with a throw of 11.94m. On the men's side, Greg Heubner finished sixth with a throw of 15.03 in the shot while Frank Johnson threw 12.76m and Nathan Lennie threw 10.51m.

On the Canadian side, the Sled Dog meet in Saskatoon provided the opportunity for Nick Pualetto to better his indoor shot mark to 15.88 by winning the event. In Second place was Murray Heber with a throw of 14.56m and in third was Grant Chapman of the University of Alberta with a throw of 14.00. In the Weight, Ian Maplethorpe led the way with a throw of 18.46m while Mark Lowe was second with 16.92m and Murray Heber was third with 16.65m. As usual at this meet an indoor discus was held and Heber won the competition with a throw of 44.49m while Lowe was second with 40.18m and Dorn Morin was third with 39.83m. In Women's shot put Karla Johnson improved upon her personal best by winning the competition with a toss of 13.01. Noreena Bodaglo was second with 12.66m and Jill Ryback was third with 12.61m. In the weight, Bodaglo and Johnson switched spots as Noreena won the competition with a season's best throw of 16.12m. Karla was second while Tara Baker threw a season's best 14.52m to finish third. In the indoor discus, Bodaglo threw 41.49m to win the competion and Johnson threw 40.28m for second. Junior Cora Andreas threw 39.48m to finish third.
