Lyons Named National Athlete Of The WeekJanuary 18 2000Wyoming Senior thrower Robin Lyons was named the national track and field Athlete of the Week by Trackwire. Lyons had a mark of 21.09 (69' 2 1/2") in the 20-pound weight throw last weekend at the Kansas Invitational in Lawrence, Kan. With that effort, Lyons has the best collegiate mark this indoor season. That mark also moves Lyons from sixth-place to third-place on the all-time collegiate list. One of the two throwers ahead of Lyons is University of Wyoming assistant coach Dawn Ellerbe, who broke her own world record in the 20-pound weight the same weekend with an effort of 23.06 (75' 8"). At UW, Lyons holds school records in the 20-pound weight, hammer throw and discus. The Panoka, Alberta native came to Wyoming from Central Arizona Junior College in the fall of 1998. "I'm real excited about Robin earning this honor and about her personal best throw this past weekend," said Larry Judge, University of Wyoming head track and field coach. "Although her throw was overshadowed by the throws of Dawn (Ellerbe) and Jesseca (Cross), it was still the third-best collegiate throw in history. This past weekend Lyons was second to Cross but was the top collegian as she threw 20.47 at an All-Comers Meet at U.S. Air Force Academy. At the same meet she was fourth in shot put with a throw of 14.74 while Liz Toman upped her personal best and moved into first place in the JumpStart Athletics Canadian Indoor Rankings with a toss of 15.29 to edge Mary LeJour's 15.26. Also competing were Derek Woodske, Jason Gervais, and Andrew McDonaugh. Gervais was second in the shot but was the first collegian with a personal best throw of 19.23 while finishing second in the weight throw with a throw of 21.22. Derek Woodske was the top collegian, also with a mark of 21.22. Andrew McDonoaugh was sixth with a personal best toss of 16.66. In Houston at the Bayou City Indoor Meet Lianne Coombe, attending SMU finished second in the weight throw with 16.96 and eleventh in shot with 11.57. Meanwhile Joe Woodske went to the top of the Junior College rankings with a huge personal best in the weight throw of 17.16. Teammate Kristof Kipp also had a huge improvement with a throw of 16.53 that beat Derek Woodske's Freshman class recor at Northern Idaho College while placing third. Crystal Smith, battling the flu had two fouls in her three throws but still managed a toss of 14.14 In Canadian meets, at the Can-Am Invitational at the St. Denis Centre at the University of Windsor, notable results came from Greg Huebner of the university of Windsor when he won the shot with a throw of 15.05. Fraser Clarke of Western was second with 14.08 while Joel Skinner of Windsor was third with 12.67. In weight throw Markus Wand of Guelph won with a throw of 11.57, Nick Phillips, also of Guelph was second with 10.61m and Nathan Lennie of Windsor was third with 9.99. In women's throws Tina McDonald of the university of Toronto won the shot with a toss of 14.76. Courtney Bovin of Windsor was second with 12.89 and Tanya Sawyers, also of Windsor was third with 12.15. Bovin then went on the to achieve a personal best in the weight with a mark of14.18. Tanya Sawyers was seoncd with 11.91 and BJ Wade was third with 9.56. At the U of S vs U of C vs U of R vs U of A Dual meet in Saskatoon Jennifer Brown led the performances with a new University of Calgary school record of 13.65 in the weight throw. Alsison Mohn of Alberta was second with 12.13 and Cora Andreas of Saksatchewan was thrid with 11.78. In shot, Andreas led the way with with a throw of 12.18. Carolyn Ash of Calgary was second with 11.51, and Alison Mohn of Alberta was third with 11.00. In mens competition, Michael MacDonald of Calgary led the way with his 13.86 in shot. Grant Chapman of Alberta was second with 13.69 and Jason Woycheshyn of Alberta was third with 12.75. In weight Chapman led the way with 13.23 while Richard Medernach of the U of S was second with 12.16 and Michael MacDonald was third with 11.94.
