Provincial Record for JohnsonJan 18 1999Carla Johnson of the University of Saskatchewan set a new Saskatchewan provincial record this past weekend at the University of Alberta Golden Bear meet. Johnson threw 15.73m and improved upon her 15.10 from a week ago. Finishing in second place was Rebecca Atkinson also of the U of S with a toss of12.59 and in third was University of Alberta athlete Suzanne Pitcher with a throw of 12.20. Johnson also won the shot with a throw of 12.60 while Calgarian Paula Mackenzie was second with a throw of 12.42 and in third was Pitcher with 12.20. On the men's side Murray Heber had a personal best throw in the weight with a toss of 17.17 while finishing second to Ian Maplethorpe who threw 18.71. Finishing third was Dave Gosnell of the University of Alberta with a throw of 13.64. Heber won the shot with a throw of 14.98. Second was Jason Woycheshyn with 13.82 and third was Dave Gosnell with 13.62. At the 18th anuual CAN-AM Track Classic Tina Macdonald reestablished her first place ranking in the CIAU with a toss of 14.12 in the shot. Anna Tomlinson of York was second with 13.56 and in third was Courtney Bovin of Windsor with a throw of 12.74. On the men's side Greg Heubner threw 15.04 to win the men's shot while Antonie Scholtz, also of Windsor threw 14.35 for second place and Frank Johnson rounded out a Windsor sweep with a throw of 13.11. At the Michigan Quadrangular sophomore All-American Scott Russell won the 35lb. weight throw with a NCAA provisional distance of 63-10 1/2 (19.47 meters) and placed second in the shot put with a throw of 56-9 1/2 (17.31 meters). Russell's performance in the 35 lb. weight was was ten feet more than fellow Jayhawk and second place finisher Chris Dunback's throw of 53-11 1/4 (16.44 meters).
