One of the feature events during the Telstra Athletics Grand Prix series in 2001 will see a hammer being thrown close to 70 metres and only centimetres separating Australia's top three girls.

Led by Olympic fifth placegetter Debbie Sosimenko (NSWIS), the women's hammer throw is sure to develop an intriguing rivalry between Debbie and fellow Sydney throwers Bronwyn Eagles and Karyne Di Marco (nee Perkins) who will all meet at the Telstra Athletics Grand Prix meets in Sydney on Friday 16 February and in Canberra on Sunday 18 February.

Sosimenko, who broke the Commonwealth record at the Sydney Games with a performance of 67.95m, has dominated this event in Australian athletics since its introduction into women's events in the early 90s.

Now she is facing a challenge from fellow Sydney Olympian Di Marco (NSWIS) who recorded a personal best of 65.38m to qualify for Australian Olympic team selection and 20-year-old Eagles (NSWIS) who threw an amazing 66.55m in December to rocket to second on the Australian all-time ranking lists.

The three female hammer throwers are leading a new generation of throwers in Australia.

Competing in the Telstra Athletics Grand Prix - Sydney will be 20-year-old Peter Elvy (NSWIS) who is Australia's new hope in the men's discus throw. Elvy smashed through the 60 metre barrier in 2000 and opened his 2001 campaign with a victory at the Telstra Athletics Grand Prix - Newcastle/Hunter on Saturday with a throw over 58m.

In the men's hammer throw, Australian Olympian Stuart Rendell (ACT) will be eyeing his own Commonwealth record this season against 2000 World junior medallist Aaron Fish from Queensland. The first competition for the male hammer throwers will be at the Telstra Athletics Grand Prix - Canberra on Sunday 18 February.

The group of young throwers on the rise is deep and also includes Australian shot put record holder Justin Anlezark (QAS) who was the first Australian male in 40 years to make the Olympic team in this event and 20-year-old Victorian Institute of Sport and Olympic javelin thrower Andrew Martin who is touted as a future international star.

Many of these throwers will compete in either the NSW or Victorian Championships being held this weekend (Friday 9 - Sunday 11 February) as the major forerunner to the Telstra Athletics Grand Prix - Sydney on Friday 16 February (Sydney Athletics Centre, Homebush) and the Telstra Athletics Grand Prix - Canberra (AIS Athletics Track, Bruce).
