CANADIAN RECORD IN THE WEIGHT THROW FOR RUSSELLFeb 27 2001Scott Russell threw 23.12m to win the Big 12 gold medal at Lincoln Nebraska this past weekend. This mark not only surpassed the Big 12 meet record, university of Kansas and 3 other records it also surpassed the old Canadian record of 22.76 set by Derek Woodske in 1999. Finishing second in the meet was Dylan Armstrong with a throw of 21.79 which was a personal best. Armstrong also had a huge personal best in shot put when he threw 17.73m to finish 5th at the Big 12 Championships. Other noteable results from the weekend came at the Southeastern Conference Championships where Mary Lejour finished second with a throw of 18.62. At the WAC championships LIanne Coombe threw 18.05 to establish a new personal best and finish second at the championships. In Canadian results from the weekend it was a weekend of conference championships as well. At the Canada West Championships in Regina Murray Heber of the U of Alberta won the weight throw for the third year in a row and established a conference record in the process. Heber threw 19.33 and was an honourable mention for performer of the meet. Dariusz Slowik of Manitoba was second with 18.72 and third went to Grant Chapman of Alberta with a trhow of 15.93m. In shot, Slowik led the way with a conference record of 16.49 and was also an honourable mention for performer of the meet. Chapman was second with 15.42 and Heber was third with a toss of 15.29. On the women's side, Karla Johnson of Saskatchewan doubled up her wins in shot and weight. She threw 16.57 to win the weight and then threw 13.66 to win shot. finishing in second in weight was Jennifer Danilowich of the U of Alberta with a throw of 13.27 while finishing third was Lisa Datchkoff of the U of Lethbridge with a throw of 12.97. In shot put Elisha gordey of Calgary was second with a throw of 11.95 and Sarah Boone of Alberta was thrid with 11.48.
