EDMONTON PREPARES TO "HOST THE WORLD'S"

Feb 27 2001

Edmonton, AB - Through the "Host the World's" program announced today, Edmontonians will have the unique opportunity to personally host members of an international athletics team coming to compete in the 8th IAAF World Championships in Athletics this summer in Edmonton.

"This is a way to truly introduce Edmonton to the world and the world to Edmonton, in a personal and unique way for both the athletes here to participate and the people who want to host them," said Craig Simpson, co-chair of the "Host the World's?" committee.

"Certainly we feel Edmonton and Edmontonians are generous, outgoing and have great community spirit, and that's what makes this program such a winner," added "Host the World's?" co-chair Kimberley Van Vliet.

The program has Edmonton hosts - families or individuals - purchase packages matching them to an international athletic team, in Edmonton to compete in The World's?. It's up to the host to offer hospitality in their own way - with ideas ranging from a back-yard BBQ, to a tour of the city, to a visit to West Edmonton Mall or any number of the city's attractions. The concept is based on a very successful attache program during the World University Games in Edmonton in 1983.

The "Host the World's?" packages sell for $2500.00 and include:

The right to host athletes and/or team representatives from a visiting country in Edmonton to participate in the 8th IAAF World Championships in Athletics, in Edmonton August 3rd through 12th.
Two tickets to a Gala Reception "Casino Monte-Carlo" at the Hotel Macdonald June 15th where hosts will be matched to international teams. Access to the Friends of 2001 hosting site at Commonwealth Stadium during The World's?
Two invitations to the IAAF Congress Opening Ceremonies (July 31, 2001, Winspear Centre)
Flag of the country
List of hosting possibilities
Option to purchase tickets to The World's? in prime seating areas

The "Host the World's?" Program is a volunteer fundraising effort of the Edmonton 2001 Athletics Foundation, a foundation which supports The World's? as well as amateur sport in Edmonton beyond this summer's event.

The 8th IAAF World Championships in Athletics is expected to bring more than 3,000 athletes, coaches and officials from more than 200 countries, to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to compete in 24 men's and 22 women's athletic events, August 3rd through 12th, 2001.
