North American High School Record for Armstrong

Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops B.C. has started out the 1999 track season without missing a beat. After establishing a North American Juvenile record with the 12lb hammer of 71.36m last summer he has now added a North American weight throw record as well. Competing at the Simplot Games on Thursday night, Armstrong unleashed a huge throw of 82'1.5" (25.03m) with the 25lb weight. A week ago Jacob Freeman of Rhode Island threw 76'11.75" (23.46) to establish a U.S high school record. Dylan's throw was almost 2 meters farther and establishes him as the farthest high school thrower in North America of all time in this event. Dylan later went on to finish fifth in the shot put but established a personal best with a throw of 17.90m.

On a weekend of conference championships in the NCAA, Scott Russell came up huge as he won the Big 12 Indoor Championships in the weight. Russell's toss of 22.40m surpassed Scott Neilson's old Canadian indoor record of 21.78 established in 1979 and although this was one week short as Derek Woodske threw 22.76 last weekend to top the record, it was godd for five other records. This throw established a new University of Kansas record, Big 12 record, Big 12 meet record, Ahearn Fieldhouse record and the absolute world age record for 20 year olds. Scott now has the absolute world age records for 18, 19, and 20 year olds in the weight. The distances are 19.26, 20.58, and 22.40 respectively. Scott also now sits third in the NCAA rankings. Russell also finished third in the shot with a throw of 17.92. Nils Oliveto, attending Oklahoma University, finished 9th with 17.33m in the Big 12 men's weight. Also at the Big 12 Championships, Caroline Larose took over sole posession of the top spot in the Fairlee National Throws Rankings in shot put by finishing 6th with a throw of 14.92m.

At the SEC Championships Brad "The Rock" Snyder easily captured his sixth title with a NCAA leading throw of 20.00m. This is a school record beating out Dawn Ellerbee who had won five SEC Championships. This is also the seventh SEC title for South Carolina in the men's shot put and Snyder retains his two year winning streak in NCAA competition. Michelle Fournier, also attending South Carolina, finished second in the weight with a throw of 19.36m. Michelle also finised 4th in the shot with a throw of 14.31m.

At the WAC Conference Chamionships, Robin Lyons managed a second place finish in the weight throw of 20.00m. This was also the distance Florence Ezeh threw but Ezeh had a better second best throw. Lyons also finished 4th in shot with a throw of 14.44m. Liz Toman finished 10th in the shot with 12.42m. On the men's side Jason Gervais finished 4th in the weight with a throw of 19.92m and 4th in the shot with a throw of 18.42m. Derek Woodske, coming off of a huge throw from last weekend, managed 6th in the weight with a throw of 19.79m. Woodske also finished 17th in shot with a throw of 14.66m.

At the Big 10 Championships Nicole Chimko finished 7th with a throw of 14.12m in shot put and at the MVC Championships Sarah Fletcher finished 4th with a throw of 17.24m in the weight.

Meanwhile, at the Ontario Juvenile/Senior Indoor Championships, Lianne Coombe won the shot with 14.02m. In second was Tina MacDonald with 13.82m and in thrid was Nicole Clarke with 12.64. In men's shot Al Hough won with 14.58m, Cheema Satkaran was second with 14.29m and third was Anthony Forgione with a personal best of 13.85m. In juvenile action, Angela Mehy threw a personal best 11.04m to win the shot. Andrea Carpella was second with 10.20m and third was Elisha Turney with a personal best 8.56m. Adam Dickerson of Windsor won the boy's shot with 12.14m. Josh Sheriff established a personal best of 11.87m to finish second. Also throwinga personal best to finish third was Nate Wilson with a throw of 11.29m. In weight throw, Nicole Clark of Kingston won the women's weight with a throw of 15.86m. Tina MacDonald was second with 15.24m and third was Lianne Coombe with 14.86m. On the men's side, Steve Bedard threw 14.36m to win the weight while Richard Parkinson threw 14.34m to finish second. Dan Parsons was third with 13.07m

At the Regina Wheat City Indoor meet Tim Johnstone won the Senior men's shot with a throw of 12.60m. Winchester Johnson was second with 12.46m and third was Cory Bertoia with 11.35m. In senior Women's action Marjorie Swab won the shot with 9.45m and Marissa McHugh was second with 8.87m. Third was Michelle Serby with 6.39m. In Juvenile boys, Jeff Piercy of the Sakatoon Track Club won the shot with a throw of 12.66m. Andrew Turbuck was second with 10.75m and third was Cole Webster with 9.57m. In juvenile girls, Adrienne Curtis won the shot with 10.01m. In second was Sharon Drake with 9.22m and in third was Kristel Onofriechuck.
