Gervais Receives Conference Honour while Misfortune Strikes TeammateFebruary 1 2000Jason Gervais was named Mountain West Conference Men's Track and Field Athlete of the Week last week and this week broke the University of Wyoming school record in the shot put when his throw puffed the chalk at 19.50. Gervais also finished second in the weight throw with a toss of 21.32. Both results were achieved at the Air Force Invitational. Meanwhile, Robin Lyons continued her unbeaten streak as she threw 20.61 in the weight throw and then provisionally qualified for the NCAA championships in the shot put when she threw a personal best of 15.16. Lyons has already automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships in weight throw and leads the nation with a toss of 21.31. Other Canadian results included Mary LeJour throwing 14.79 in shot put to finish third while LIz Toman finished fourth with 14.73. While things are going well for most Canadian athletes at the Univesity of Wyoming misfortune has struck another promising Canadian Wyoming Cowboy as Derek Woodske ruptured his right pattela tendon at practice last Thursday. The accident occured while Woodske was doing plyometric box jumps. He underwent surgery on Friday and will not be returning this season. The doctor has assured him that the injury will be fully healed in 10 weeks time and then will undergo extensive rehabilitation and should be 100% by September 2000. Woodske established a Canadian record of 22.79 in the weight throw last season and entered the top ten all time with that performance. Woodske was on track for a great season again with his performance of 21.72 which put him in fourth spot on the NCAA list. At the University of Toronto Track Classic Christa Goebel led the women's shot results with a throw of 12.90. Anna Tomlinson of York University was second with 12.63 while NIcole Clarke of Queen's was third with 12.35. In weight Clarke went on to win the women's weight throw with a toss of 15.87. Hannah Cole, also of Queen's was second with 12.48 while Jennifer Greenaway rounded out the Queen's sweep of the event. On the men's side Mike Melaney led a one - two punch for Queen's when he and Corey Trudeau finsihed first and second. Melaney threw 14.43 while Trudeau threw 14.31. Placing third was Satkan Cheema with a toss of 14.02. In the weight, Richard Parkinson led the men's 35lb results with a mark of 13.35 while Melaney threw a ciau standard mark of 12.81 and Trudeau was third with 12.17. In juvenile men's results Nate Wilson threw 15.72 to win his event. At the Sled Dog Open in Saskatoon Geoff Dolan of the University of Lethbridge and Chinook Track Clubs extended his lead in the CIAU rankings when he threw a personal best of 17.77 in weight throw. Daniel Enns of Manitoba also established a personal best when he threw 12.91 to finish second while Cory Bertoia threw 12.49 to finish third. In women's weight throw Noreena Bodaglo extended her lead in the CIAU with a seasons best throw of 16.42 while Erin Riste of the Chinook Track Club established a new Alberta provincial junior record while finishing second with a throw of 14.72. Finishing third was Cora Andreas of Saskatchewan with a throw of 13.44. In other results Courtney Bovin and Tany Sawyers of Windsor both had personal bests in the weight throw at Findlay Fieldhouse. Bovin threw 15.15 and now sits third in the CIAU rankings while Sawyers threw 13.76 to move her to fourth on the CIAU list.
