Canadian National Championship ResultsAug 4 1998National Senior Championships ResultsAugust 4 1998The 1998 version of the National Senior Championships enjoyed warm weather and a gusty breeze along with small enthusiatic crowds around the throwing areas. Complete results of the throws can be found at 1998 Canadian Senior Championships results page In Women's shot put, Calgary's Georgette Reed provided no surprises when she won the event with a throw of 15.56m. Finishing second was first year senior Caroline Larose with a throw of 14.14m and Michelle Fournier, competing in her first of three events, finished third with a toss of 13.53m. In women's Javelin Nicole Chimko of Alberta won her first of two gold medals with a throw of 51.16m. Earlier in the season Chimko finished third at the NCAA Championships with a throw of 53.66m. Finishing second was Dominique Bilodeau with almost a 2m personal best and a throw of 48.00m. Isabelle Surprenant, who came into the event ranked second behind Chimko, could only manage a throw of 47.69m for third place. On Saturday evening the women's hammer throw appeared to suffer from the slow surface with the exception of Caroline Wittrin who established a Championship record on her way to winning the event with 60.12m. Finishing second was Michelle Fournier who would manage to win to silver medals at the championships. Her throw was 54.63m while third place went to Patti Pilsner-Steinke who manged to only throw 54.48m. On Sunday the final women's event was the discus in which both Chimko and Fournier won their second medals of the weekend. Chimko rose to the occasion and threw 51.41m to win the event while Fournier threw 49.48m for second place. This throw was a personal best for Fournier and was a great confidence booster as Fournier had struggled in recent weeks with her discus and was suffering from a sore back. In third place was Robin Lyons who had won the silver medal in 1997 but threw 48.66m to edge out last years winner Georgette Reed who threw 48.35m The first throws event for the men was javelin and although not at a high calibre in the way of results, provided an entertaining and hotly contested battle. Erin Bevans won the event with a throw of 70.84m which was short of the Commonwealth Standard minimum of 76.00m. Bevans had thrown a new Canadian record of 79.52m earlier in the winter but has not thrown the standard within the appropriate time frame. He is awaitng the results of his appeal to see if he will make the team to Kuala Lumpir. In the final round of the competition Larry Steinke overcame the second place position of Andrew McDonaugh by 3cm with throw of 65.94m. McDonaugh, who traded second place with Steinke and Mike Smith throughout the competition finished in third place with a throw of 65.91m. Smith was fourth with a throw of 65.34m. In Men's Hammer performances were again hampered by a slow circle with the exception of John Stoikos. Stoikos, who felt exceptional and was within reach of the Canadian Record threw 70.14m. Stoikos will have another kick at the cat when he competes for the Canadian team at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpir in September. In second place was Glenn McAtee who threw 61.35m to outpace Ian Maplethorpe who threw 60.82m. In men's shot put a competitive weary Brad Snyder managed to hold off Jason Tunks with a throw of 18.56, avoiding a repeat of the 1997 championships when Tunks out threw Snyder for the Gold. Tunks won his first medal of the meet with a throw of 18.12 which was good enough for second spot. Third spot was hotly contested between decathlete Michael Smith and Manitoba's Nicolas Pauletto, a crowd favourite. Smith took third spot from Pauletto in the fifth round with a toss of 17.00m. Pauletto, although throwing a season's best of 16.18m, was only able to finish fourth. Men's discus provided the opportunity for Jason Tunks, presently ranked second in the world with a toss of 67.88m, to show his prowess. Tunks easily won his second medal of the meet with a throw of 62.79m. A strong performance by Eric Forshaw of 57.90m allowed him to move into second spot. Al Hough also had a strong performance of 53.02m to finish third.
