National Junior Record for Armstrong

April 18 2000

Dylan Armstrong of Kamloops opened his outdoor campaign with a flurry of exceptional throws this past weekend and set a new Canadain Junior Record in the hammer in the process. After coming within 8cm of Scott Nielson's 24 year old record on Friday night at the Pomon-Pitzer Invitational with a toss of 67.42, Armstrong upped his performance on Sunday and crushed Neilson's record by almost two meters with a huge personal best throw of 69.15. Armstrong had erased Neilson's Junior record in the Weight Throw with a throw of 20.90 at a meet in Idaho in February and left little doubt that the outdoor record would also go this season. Armstrong also jumped to the top of the junior rankings in shot put with a toss of 15.45.

Other noteable results from the Pomona-Pitzer included Robin lyons finishing 5th in discus with a mark of 53.15 and 11th in hammer with a mark of 57.94, while Mary LeJour, Lori Perrie, and Carol Stevenson, all set personal bests in women's hammer with marks of 53.96, 53.26, and 53.08 respectively. while on the mens side Jason Gervais was third in shot with 17.89, second in discus with 59.70, and third in hammer with 61.28. Erin Bevans also opened his outdoor campaign with a win in the javelin with a throw of 71.38.

At the Long Beach Invitational on Saturday, Lyons was 1st in discus with 52.62 and 2nd in hammer with a throw of 61.06 while Gervais won the discus with 60.38, finished 2nd in shot with 18.53, and 6th in hammer with 62.08.

The Mt. Sac Relays served as the final throws meet in a series of meets in California and only limited results have become available. Those results include Liz Toman finishing second in the shot put with a throw of 15.25, Nicole Chimko finishing third in javelin with a toss of 49.00, Gervais finishing 2nd in the shot with 17.98, Andrew McDonagh finishing 4th in javelin with 70.50, and Jason Tunks finishing 5th in a strong field of discus throwers with a toss of 63.84. In the University/Open mens javelin Dan Ralph set a personal best in javelin with a mark of 69.44.

In other throws results Julie Demarni of BC who is attending North Idaho College set a new NJCAA national record in the javelin with a throw of 45.64. This is a personal best for Demarni and is the third in as many weekends, each by almost two meters.
