Edmonton facility upgrades approvedApril 14 2000EDMONTON (CP) -- The board of directors for the 2001 world track and field championships has approved $26.525 million in capital upgrades for Commonwealth and Clarke Stadiums in preparation for the competition. Commonwealth Stadium, the main event site, will receive an extension of the east concourse and improvements to the north end of the stadium, while the smaller Clarke Stadium will undergo a more complete renovation, including a new track, dressing rooms, concession areas, and spectator seating for 1,300. "With these upgrades we will ensure that we will not only be able to play host to the world next year, but we will have a facility for future world-class events," said Jack Agrios, board chair. The world championships, billed as the third-largest sporting event in the world behind the Olympics and soccer World Cup -- are expected to bring more than 3,000 athletes, coaches and officials to Edmonton from 200 countries, in addition to a worldwide television audience of four billion.
