Stoikos Nears RecordApril 14 1998Only two years after Boris Stoikos took a run at the Canadian Men's hammer record brother John is doing the same. At the Sea Ray Relays this past weekend John became only the third Canadian to break the 70m barrier and Scott Nielson's record looks to be in jeopardy once again. Neilson set the Canadian Record of 72.72m in 1978 in Seattle and is the oldest throws record still on the books. John is looking very good this season and seems to be picking up where he left off after a successful '97 campaign where he won a bronze medal at the Francophone Games with a toss of 68.40m. At the same meet Glenn McAtee upped his season's best to 62.68m Continuing to expand on her personal best in javelin for the third weekend in a row was Nicole Chimko. Competing in a dual meet at UCLA through pouring rain, cold temperatures and wind on Saturday at Drake Stadium, Chimko, competing for University of Minnesota, upped her personal best to 51.46m. She now sits atop the Foot Locker National rankings after finishing the indoor season on top of the Shot Put rankings. Nicole is in her first season as a senior and looks to be putting the pressure on. Scott Russell also had a good weekend as he finished third in Shot Put, third in Hammer, and won the javelin at the USTCA Sunflower Classic. Russell threw 68.12m which was shy of his Canadian record that he established last weekend but a good throw nonetheless.
