Armstrong Shares Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Athlete Of The Week Honors

April 9 2001

DALLAS - University of Texas freshman Dylan Armstrong (Kamloops, B.C.) shared Big 12 Conference Male Track & Field Athlete of the Week honors with Baylor sprinter/hurdler Bayano Kamani the conference announced on Monday.

Armstrong shattered the UT hammer throw record en route to first-place honors at the 74th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays last Thursday. Competing in his first hammer competition of the season, he recorded a NCAA automatic toss of 227-4 (fourth nationally) and broke the school record by almost 40 feet. All six of his throws bettered the second-place effort of Purdue's Chris Brown (215-8) and were qualifying marks for the national meet. A silver medalist at the 2000 IAAF World Junior Championships in the hammer, Armstrong now holds two UT records in his inaugural campaign as a Longhorn. The 6-foot-3, 275-pounder registered the top six 35-pound weight throws in school history during the indoor season, including a UT-record toss of 72-7 at the NCAA Championships (fourth place).

The Longhorns return to action on Saturday, April 14, when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., for the LSU Alumni Gold meet.
