Tunks Third in BrasilApril 27 1999After losing a tight competition to American John Godina last weekend and finishing second, Jason Tunks again finished behind two Americans as he competed in Brasil. Tunks threw 64.29, to Anthony Washington's 64.57, and Andy Bloom's 64.40, in a tightly contested match. Tunks is showing signs of last year's throwing prowess and is still preparing for big late season throws. Jason's wife Terri, beat out fellow American Connie Price-Smith and Brazilian Adriano Elisangela to win the women's shot put. Terri threw 18.48 to win the event. At the Penn Relays, Michelle Fournier and Brad Snyder once again led the way for South Carolina as both were event winners. Snyder easily won the men's shot with a throw of 19.64 while Fournier threw 58.90 to win the women's hammer. Aaron Larson was tenth in men's shot with 15.11. In women's hammer Robin Lyons was fifth with 55.44, Ruth Conlon was ninth with 52.02 and Nathalie Thenor was eleventh with 46.18. Lyons also set a personal best in the women's discus enroute to a second place finish. Her throw of 51.66 was more than 20cm farther than she had thrown earlier in the season. Finishing tenth with 44.46 was Erin Sepic and fifteenth was Nathalie Thenor with 42.72. In javelin, Dominique Bilodeau opened her season on a positive note when she finished third with a toss of 47.96. Mary Lejour managed a personal best in shot put while finishing eighth with a throw of 12.92 while Lyons was sixth with 13.36. At the Drake Relays, Scott Russell defended his title when he over took the lead from St. Clair when he threw 70.56 on his last throw. Peter Juszczyk was third with 65.12. Russell was also fifth in men's hammer with 60.14. On the women's side, Nicole Chimko finished third in javelin with a throw of 46.58, well below her seasons best of 54.94. Chimko also finished eight in shot put with a throw of 14.24. She also threw 48.06 to finish fifth in discus. At the California/Nevada Championships in San Diego Garrett Collier upped his season's best in men's hammer when he threw 57.80 to finish first in his flight and then went on to throw 57.46 in the final to finish seventh. Jennifer Joyce finished fourth on the women's side when she threw 54.86 in hammer. At the University of Buffalo Open Al Hough won the men's discus with a throw of 48.86 and then went on to win a tightly contested shot put where he threw 15.14 to second place finisher Satkarn Cheema who threw 15.09 to set an Laurel Creek Track Club record. On the north side of the border, numerous early season meets took place with a number of good showings. In Lethbridge at the Throws Gala, participants took advantage of the great weather to set a number of personal bests and a number of provincial records. Robert Pavan of the Chinook Club set an under 16 Alberta Provincial record in the men's hammer when he threw 41.38 with the 12lb pound implement and then threw another provincial record of 41.96 with the 5kg hammer later in the second competition of the meet. Pavan surpassed the old record of 38.66 which was set by Murray Heber in 1995. Club mate Patti Pilsner-Steinke has started to regain form as she threw 58.85 in women's hammer to easily win her event. In junior men's javelin Dave Proctor set a personal best in javelin with a throw of 50.10. Proctor, a member of the Caltaf club also set a personal best with the 1.6kg discus of 40.20 in the third discus competition of the weekend. Ryan Thomsen of Caltaf also set a personal best in shot put with a throw of 12.29. At the 22nd Annual Forest City Prep, Steven Bedard won the shot with a throw of 17.10. Fraser Clarke was second with 15.57 and John Pilling was third with 14.92. Bedard also won the discus with a throw of 52.08. Trevor Snyder won the javelin with a throw of 59.68 to set a meet record. Chris Sequin of Villanova had the previous record of 51.00 set in 1998. Snyder also established a meet record in the discus when he threw 46.60. Arthur Turland, finishing second also surpassed the old mark of 45.00 set by Shaun Peet in 1998.
