Armstrong Scores Big Again!!

Dylan Armstrong is making a habit of setting records and this past weekend was no exception. Competing at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, Armstrong once again broke the North American High School Hammer record only one week after Jacob Freeman, a senior at Bishop Hendricken in Warwick Rhode Island threw 73.96 (242'08") and broke Armstrong's record from 1998. Dylan responded this weekend with a huge toss of 76.58. He also threw the shot 13.88 and finished 4th in discus with a 51.31 at the Mt Sac Relays to cap off the weekend.

Canadian record holder Caroline Wittrin competed in her second and third meets of the season and finished 8th in the Pamona-Pitzer women's hammer with 59.82 and then went on to finish 14th with 55.26 at Mt. Sac. Robin Lyons Also competed in both of these meets and finished 10th in women's hammer at Pamona with 58.58 and 13th at Mt. Sac with 55.32. She also finished 10th in the Pamona discus with 48.14 and 4th in the Mt. Sac discus with 51.42. Liz Toman finished 9th at the Pamona discus with 49.58. Mary Lejour set a personal best of 48.84 in the discus at Mt. Sac finishing 7th.

Jason Tunks battled dead even in still air with John Godina for most of the Mt. Sac meet and finished 2nd to the world champion with a toss of 64.72. This was only Tunk's second meet of the season and has already established himself as a potential medal threat at the world championships in August. Meanwhile Scott Russell finshed 4th in javelin with a throw of 70.50. Veteran Tom Petranoff won the event with a throw of 76.45.

At the SEC Quad Meet in Gainesville Florida, Michelle Fournier and Brad Snyder both had exceptional meets and moved their personal bests closer to Canadian records. Snyder flirted with Bruno Pauletto's 16 year old year and came within 9cm of breaking it. Snyder's toss of 20.51 also maintained his unbeaten streak and upped his lead in the NCAA rankings. Snyder also finished 4th in discus with a throw of 55.52. Fournier was also busy as she became only the second Canadian woman to break the 200 foot barrier as she won the event with a throw of 61.30 which keeps her in third spot on the NCAA rankings and first in the Fairlee National Throws Rankings. Fournier also collected two 2nd place finished in shot and discus with 14.72 and 50.96 respectively.

Nicole Chimko came within 8cm of a personal best as she won the discus at the St. Olaf Manitou Track Classic. Chimko also provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in winning this event with a toss of 52.45 and moved in to top spot in the Fairlee National Throws Rankings.

Also making a move in the rankings this week was Andrea Bulat who threw 51.08 in women's javelin at the Tyson Invitational in Arkansas. This throw was a John McDonnell Stadium Record and moved her into second spot in the Fairlee National Throws Rankings and 6th spot in the NCAA rankings. Peter Juszczyk completed the Canadian sweep of the javelin event when he won the men's javelin with a throw of 66.00

Competing at the Michael Johnson classic at Baylor University in Waco Texas, Vicki Webb finished 2nd in javelin with a throw of 41.50 while NIls Oiveto won the men's hammer with a throw of 56.72

Noteable results from the Peak Performance Meet #1 at the Toronto Track and Field Centre at York University in Toronto, included Tina McDonald winning the women's shot put and discus with throws of 13.36 and 44.98.Christa Goebel was second in the shot with 11.94. Meanwhile Ned Kuruc and Nick Hewlett battled it out in discus with Kuruc coming out on top with a throw of 45.07 and Hewlett tossing 44.71.

The Chinook Track Club opened its' outdoor campaign as they travelled to the Montana State Open where Patti Pilsner-Steinke won the hammer with a throw of 58.44 while team mate Carla Pavan threw 50.21 to finish 4th. Junior Amanda Spyce finished 11th with a throw of 34.96 and 8th in javelin with a throw of 42.26. On the mens side Andrew Baxter won the javelin with a 3rd round toss of 60.48 to edge out David Wood of Rick's College. Wood threw 59.63 for second while Tono Lippy of MSU was third with 58.90.

Finishing of the weekend, in men's javelin Dave Matson increased his personal best when he competed at the Nittany Lion Relays. Matson threw 68.76 which is a provisional NCAA Championships qualifying mark.
