Hot Weekend for Women's JavApril 13 1999This past weekend was a hot one for Canadian women's javelin as three Canadians now sit in the top ten in the NCAA. At the Hayward relays in Oregon Nicole Chimko won the javelin with a toss of 52.60. Although she did not better her mark of 54.94 she still retains her number two position in the NCAA rankings. Chimko also finished 8th in shot with 12.85 and 9th in discus with 42.50. After winning the high jump Whitney Evans, copmpeting for Washington State University finished 10th in the javelin with 35.38. Meanwhile, at the Wichita State home opener, two Canadian junior rivals battled head to head and when they were finished both had finished first and second, established personal bests, provisional NCAA qualifiers, and were sitting in the NCAA top ten. Viki Webb's (Wichita) 5th round throw of 48.62 also moved her into second spot in the Fairlee National Rankings. Andrea Bulat's (Kansas State) throw of 48.26 was good for second at the meet and third in the Fairlee National rankings. Competing at the same meet Scott Russell moved to the top of the provisional list by winning the javelin with a throw of 72.01. He also won the hammer with 60.65 and the discus with 52.49. Brad Snyder extended his lead in the NCAA and kept his collegiate unveaten streak alive when he won the South Carolina Intercollegiate Championships shot put with a throw of 19.82. He had briefly lost his NCAA lead earlier in the day when SMU's Janus Robberts, the world junior record holder, threw 19.76 at the Sierra Providence Invitational. Michelle Fournier also blasted out another win with a second best ever result for her in the hammer with a throw of 59.74. Fournier presently sits 3rd on the women's NCAA hammer list At the U.S. Air Force Academy Quadrangular, Liz Toman was a multiple scorer and led the Colorado State University team to a win over the Air Force, Idaho and UNC. Toman won the shot with 13.72, was wecond in discus with 49.22, and then won the javelin with 39.56. At the Miami Invitational run at the Rider Track at Miami University on Saturday, Trish Young, attending Louisville, finished 5th in the shot with 12.29 but managed a win in the javelin with a toss of 39.40. Meanwhile, John Wawrysh, also attending Lousiville finshed 5th in discus with 45.82, 11th in shot with 12.82, and 8th in javelin with 39.98 On Saturday Shaun Cormier competed at the Sun Angel Track Classic and threw 15.51 in shot to finish 5th and managed a 4th place finish in hammer with a throw of 50.58 In other results Robin Lyons led Wyoming with wins in shot put, 14.40, and discus, 50.42, after having finished 7th in hammer. Also at the Purdue meet, Mary Lejour threw the javelin out to 39.70. Wes Boudreau opened his outdoor campaign with a 6th place finish in the men's hammer at the Sea Ray Relays with a toss of 58.50. Kris Watson upped his seasonal best in the discus to 54.97 at San Diego and Joe Woodske increased his personal best in the hammer to 46.91 while competing at the Bob Gibb Classic at Boise State University . This throw also qualified Woodske for the the NJCAA outdoor nationals in Edwardsville Illinois in May. Jason Tunks also opened his outdoor season at the Sierra Providence UTEP Invitational where he won the discus with a throw of 63.63.
