2000 INTERNATIONAL JUNIOR MATCH

Location: Montréal, QuébécCentre Claude Robillard Competition Dates: July 18, 19, 2000 Eligibility: C Must be a registered member (athlete) of Athletics Canada; C Must be a Canadian citizen with a current Canadian passport or have Landed Immigrant status and be actively pursuing Canadian citizenship;C Must have no eligibility issues which preclude participation in the 2000 International Junior Match;C Athletes of the junior age group (aged 19 or under by December 31, 2000, born in 1981 or later) are eligible for selection. Events: Men: 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 3000, 3000s/c, 110H, 400H, HJ, PV, LJ, TJ, SP, DT, HT, JT, 4x100, 4x400, DMR (800, 400, 1200, 1600) Women: 100, 200, 400, 800, 1500, 3000, 100H, 400H, HJ, PV, LJ, TJ, SP, DT, HT, JT, 4x100, 4x400, DMR (800, 400, 1200, 1600) Estimated Team Size: 88 (74 athletes, 9 coaches, 2 managers, 3 medical) Maximum Per Event: 2 Selection Trials: National Junior Championships, Montréal, QU, July 14-16, 2000 SELECTION CRITERIA Objectives: I) To provide a large number of junior-aged athletes the opportunity to compete at an international level and to gain National Team experience. II) To gain experience at a selection trails where team selection is based on direct head to head competition. Selection: I) Athletes will be ranked in order of finish at the Trials. Athletes finishing first or second in their event at the Trials will be eligible for selection and will be placed in the Selection Pool. Should a first and/or second place finisher not wish to attend the International Junior Match, up to the 4th place finisher will be eligible for selection and placed in the Selection Pool. II) The first eligible athletes will be those that are the first place finishers at the trials who wish to compete at the International Junior Match. These athletes may not be removed by an appeal from his/her position on the team. III) The second eligible athletes will be those that are the next place finisher at the trials. Nomination of second eligible athletes will normally be automatic, however it will be subject to the outcome of an appeal for selection in that event. Exceptions: I) 3000 meters: 4 athletes will be selected to compete at the International Junior Match in this event. The order of priority for selection will be as follows: a) Mens 3000m The top 2 at the Trials in the 5000m event and the top 2 in the 10000m event at the Trials will be eligible for selection to compete in the 3000m event at the International Junior Match. b) Womens 3000m The top 2 at the Trials in the 3000m event and the top 2 in the 5000m event at the Trials will be eligible for selection to compete in the 3000m event at the International Junior Match. Final Selection: The National Team Selection Committee will be responsible for using all foregoing criteria to prepare a list of nominees from the selection pool that have achieved the criteria outlined. From the list of nominees, a Team List will be created and these athletes will be considered selected. No selection is final until it is approved by the National Team Selection Committee. Appeals for Selection: Appeals for selection must be submitted in writing and received by the National Team Selection Committee within two hours of the completion of the final of the athletes event at the Trials. If an athletes appeal would displace another athlete for selection in any event, the athlete who is making the appeal must substantiate in writing the grounds for appeal, including objective proof of consistent superior performance during the period of January 1, 2000 to the start of the National Junior Championships, July 14, 2000. The National Team Selection Committee must first determine that the criteria for consistent superior performance has been fulfilled, otherwise the appeal shall not be accepted. Selection Date: Athletics Canada will announce the final Team on Sunday, July 16th. Entry at the Match: Final declaration of events on site in Montréal of all athletes named to the Team will be finalized by the team staff. This includes the composition of all relay teams in qualifying and final rounds and additional events. Accommodations: All athletes selected to the Team will stay together in Montréal after the National Junior Championships, July 14-16, 2000. This National Team begins Sunday evening (after the completion of the Junior Championships), July 16, 2000 and concludes on Thursday, July 20, 2000 (after the Social Lunch). Athletes will be given the option to join the team in the Hotel Auberge Universel lobby by 10am, Monday, July 17th (please check in with the Team Managers). At the time of selection, each athlete will be required to indicate when they will be joining the team and provide a local contact number to be reached during this time period. Travel: Athletes selected to the team will be required to stay in Montréal until Thursday, July 20th (departures after 2pm). For those athletes that may need to make alternative travel arrangements (i.e, air flight ticket changes if required) upon selection to the team for a later departure out of Montréal on Thursday, July 20, 2000, team staff will assist each athlete with this process. In order to do so efficiently and economically, we ask that athletes who expect to be selected to the International Junior Team and are traveling by air, book their flight with the following travel agents: Algonquin Travel 1-800-267-1591 (Mike Isherwood) Bruce Travel 1-800-668-1768 (Joyce Larmer) Each athlete will be required to provide team staff with a copy of the original airline itinerary on-site in Montréal.
If an athlete chooses not to use the travel agencies listed above, Athletics Canada cannot guarantee that ticket changes will be possible or that the full costs will be covered. Please note that a maximum of $107.00 per ticket change will be permitted per athlete if required. Funding: This is a self-funded team. The following amount (cash, certified cheque, credit card or money order ) is to be:
Waiver: All athletes under 18 years of age must have a waiver form signed by their parent or guardian prior to the start of the International Junior Match. This waiver form is attached. This form must be signed and submitted at the Athletics Canada National Team Desk in Montréal during the Trials. Medical and Travel insurance: Medical insurance will be secured for athletes provided the athlete is covered under his/her Provincial Medicare Plan. Athletes must provide this number at the Athletics Canada National Team Desk during the Trials. Optional insurance can be purchased through a travel agent. Each athlete must provide your medicare number (or proof of travel insurance) to the team manager upon selection to the team at the Trials in Montréal. A medical doctor, physiotherapist and massage therapist will be on site with the team. Their primary focus will be to treat acute injuries that occur in Montréal or prior to the start of the International Junior Match and then chronic injuries based on assessment and time constraints.
WHAT TO BRING TO MONTREAL:
For any discrepancy between English and French selection criteria documents for the 2000 International Junior Match, the English document will be considered accurate.
