1998-2000 National Team Coaching Selections Selection Policy and ApplicationsIntroductionCoaches like athletes, should be recognized and encouraged for their efforts. One such form of recognition is selection to a Canadian National Team. It is an honour, not a right to receive a staff appointment. Coaches are selected to National Teams for the purpose of establishing an optimal environment (which includes efficiency, safety and equity) conducive to personal best performance, while at the same time contributing to the total team environment. In any given year, sixty to ninety individual coaches have athletes they are personally coaching selected to National Teams. Athletics Canada recognizes that this accomplishment provides a large group of qualified coaches with the ability to prepare athletes for international competition. It is from this group that the coaches with the additional skills necessary to fulfil the expectations of a National Team Coach will generally be chosen. Each year more coaches become qualified for National Team assignments and gain further experience. Each year athletes are selected to National Teams for the first time and reflect the competence of their coaches. Athletics Canada is committed to excellence in Athletics which includes of course Coaching excellence. Coaching excellence is reflected in the following principles for National Team Coach Selection. Principles 1. Integrity COACHING INTEGRITY IS THE FOUNDATION FOR ALL OTHER CONSIDERATIONS IN COACHING SELECTION AND OVER-RIDES ALL OTHER PRINCIPLES A National Team Coach will be beyond reproach in his/her professional and personal behaviour when selected to an Athletics Canada National Team. The title National Team Coach carries with it the responsibility for integrity in all activities associated with Athletics in Canada including those of the Branch, Club and other affiliated groups. A National Team Coach is expected to discuss with each athlete in his/her charge or group the level of the athlete's and Team's expectations and to treat all athletes with an equal measure of respect and concern. A National Team Coach is expected to communicate openly and honestly with each athlete in his/her group in a wholly positive manner and with the personal coach of the athlete prior to, during where necessary and after National Team competitions. 2. Experience Experience includes previous selections to National Teams, record of performance as a coach with National Teams and personal coaching record regarding selection of personally coached athletes to National Teams. As well, experience will be measured via Branch involvement that includes Provincial team staff assignments including but not limited to Canada Games, Western Canada Games, interprovincial competitions and National Championships. Experience will be measured according to the National Team Coach Application Eligibility Form. Applicants will be assigned to one of three categories according to point totals, and record of National Team experience at the beginning of each multi-year cycle (see application form attached). 3. Certification National Team Coaches must be fully certified at Level 3 NCCP (wheelchair coaches level II, III theory) and progressing toward level 4/5 NCCP status via an Athletics Canada approved learning program. Head National Team Coaches will be certified Level 4 to be eligible for selection to National Teams beginning in 1994. Olympic team selection requires all coaches to be Level 4 as of 1996. Paralympic team selection will consider the highest level of NCCP certification available. 4. Frequency of Appointment Because Athletics Canada is committed to excellence in coaching, each year new coaches will enter the National Team Coach pool. Frequency of appointment will be dependant upon the number and category of assignments available each year. Event Groups rich in qualified coaches will naturally reflect a longer cycle of rotating appointments and conversely event groups who currently have a limited qualified coaching pool will see more frequent assignments. 5. Evaluation After each National Team assignment, coaches will be evaluated. The evaluation team will include: the Head Coach of the respective team; Athlete captains and or event group athlete reps on that National Team; the National Program Directors in consultation with the Director of Athlete and Coach Development Programmes; other relevant personel. Results of the evaluation will be circulated to the National Team Coaches. The evaluations will be used to improve coaching leadership skills. Should there be a confirmed breach of Principle 1- INTEGRITY, the Coach will be informed on site and will be subject to sanctions including suspension from further National Team assignments for a specified period of time with the right to appeal as outlined in the Red Book. Selection Methodology Policy Note: With the change in structure to the Power\Speed and Endurance groups, the clause referring to event group coordinator coaching assignment frequency has been deleted.
