1997 Universiade (FISU Games)
Location: Sicily, Italy
Date: 26-31 August 1997
Qualifying Trials: 1997 Canadian Senior (18-20 July) and Combined Events (10,11 July) Championships at Rotary Stadium, Abbotsford, British Columbia
Eligibility: Must be a registred athlete member of Athletics Canada, have fulfilled FISU eligibility rules and be a Canadian Citizen with current passport as at midnight 20 July 1997.

- All athletes who wish to be considered for selection to the 1997 FISU Games Team must attend Athletics Canada's 1997 Canadian Senior or Combined Events Championships.
- There will be no pre-selection.
- All athletes must have achieved the Athletics Canada FISU Games Minimum Standards between 01 April 1997 and the end of their event at the Trials. No performances established in any event after the end of that event at the Trials will be considered for selection to the FISU Games Team.
- A maximum of 2 athletes per individual event will be selected.
- School forms bearing all required signatures and seals must be presented to the National Office by 3 May 1997. Athletics Canada is under no obligation to select athletes who have not submitted these forms, fully completed, by the deadline date.
-The first or second FISU eligible finishers in each event at the Trials who have achieved the Minimum Standard will be eligible for selection and placed in the "Selection Pool". Should a first and/or second place finisher not wish to attend the FISU Games, up to the 4th place FISU eligible finisher with the Minimum Standard will be eligible for selection and placed in the Selection Pool.
-No athlete ranked lower in the Selection Pool list than 25th, excluding World Championship Team Athletes who do not wish to compete at the FISU Games, will be eligible to be selected (except relay athletes) and place in the Selection Pool.
-Eligible athletes must inform the National Team Selection Committee prior to the end of the Trials of their intention to compete and must provide a $250 deposit to hold their place on the Team by the end of the Trials.
