Track team continues to impress

University of Lethbridge Pronghorn throwers are making a habit of bringing home the gold but the 'Horns are also making inroads in a number of other disciplines as well. The team put in another solid effort at the Downtown Lions Sled Dog Invitational Track meet at the University of Saskatchewan over the weekend.

Jim Steacy and Chris Meisner once again led the 'Horns with first-place finishes in the weight throw and shot put respectively. Scott Paterson added a bronze-medal finish in weight throw while Johnathon Doucette added a bronze in the shot put event and Jaime Thomas netted bronze in men's high jump.

Steacy's throw of 19.41 metres established a new provincial junior record and it was also the second farthest throw recorded by a Canadian junior athlete. Steacy now sits almost three metres ahead of his nearest competitors in the CIS, most of which are his teammates. Pronghorns currently occupy six spots in the country's top-10.

On the women's side, Lorraine Harty had a superb weekend dominating the horizontal jumps and anchoring the 'Horns relay team. Harty won gold in the women's long jump with a leap of 5.40 metres, grabbed a silver medal in the women's triple jump and anchored the 4x100-metre relay team to a silver-medal finish.

Megan Oleson won a gold medal in the junior women's 600m, Barb Hunter added a silver medal in the women's 3000m and Tara Burke added a fourth-place finish in the women's 1000m to move into the top 10 in the CIS.

Other strong performances for the women included a fourth-place finish by Alanna Baum in the junior women's 60m sprint, Tanya Bunbury's fifth-place finish in the 60-metre hurdles, and a fifth-place finish by the women's 4x800 meter relay team.

"I was quite impressed with the effort this weekend," Pronghorns coach Larry Steinke said in a news release. "Some great performances were put in by most of the team and they are certainly gaining a lot of confidence with only five weeks to go before the (Canada West) championships."

Chinook Track Club's Heather Steacy, a Grade 9 student out of Gilbert Paterson, placed seventh in the open women's weight throw with a 12.62-metre toss, establishing a new Alberta provincial midget and juvenile record. It was also the third-longest throw by an Alberta female under the age of 19.

Next action for the Pronghorns will be when a small contingent travels to the Knights of Columbus Invitational meet, Feb. 7 in Saskatoon. This meet is a high-performance meet that is by invitation only and features many top athletes from the United States and Canada.
