Meisner sets Jr. shot mark

From the Lethbridge Herald MAY 22 2002

Chris Meisner of the Chinook Track and Field Club continued his assault on the record books this past weekend as he established a new Canadian Junior Record in the shot put.

Meisner threw 18.18 metres at the Chinook Throws Gala to break his previous record of 17.63m set in Calgary the weekend before. Meisner's teammate Jonathan Doucette was second with a toss of 17.08m, ranking him second in the country behind Meisner. The mark also qualified Meisner for the Canadian team that will compete at the World Junior Championships in Kingston, Jamaica in July as he surpassed the team standard of 17.90m.

In the discus event, Doucette also moved to the top of the junior Canadian rankings with his toss of 49.64m while Meisner was second with a toss of 48.60m to move him into third in the country.

Jim Steacy continued his dominance of the junior men's hammer as he won the meet with a throw of 62.82m and sits atop the Canadian rankings after having established a new Canadian junior record two weekends before with a toss of 65.54m.

Sean Steacy finished second in the juvenile men's hammer with a throw of 46.66m but is ranked first in the country with his toss of 52.36m.

"These three guys (Steacy, Doucette, and Meisner) represent a very strong component of the junior men's throws program in this country," head coach Larry Steinke said in a news release. "We are hoping that all three will represent Canada at the World Juniors and it looks like only a matter of time before Jonathan and Jim will qualify as well."

On the women's side, Patti Pilsner-Steinke won the women's hammer event with a throw of 56.88 metres while Carla Pavan was second with a throw of 53.68m. Pilsner-Steinke is ranked third in the country while Pavan is ranked eighth.

Jamie Alliban of the Chinook Track club won the junior women's hammer with a throw of 42.50m while Andrea Sanders was second.

Alliban and Sanders are presently ranked fourth and fifth in the country respectively. Heather Steacy won the midget women's event with a throw of 33.62m.

"The club as a whole is doing extremely well nationally right now," Steinke said. "Club members presently take up 24 spots in the top 5 rankings from juvenile to senior in Canada, which is exceptional for a small community like ours.

"We continue to have the largest group of throwers in the country and with quality athletes like these it's definitely easy to see why I'm excited about the upcoming summer."

The club will now take a weekend off before competing at the Rocky Mountain Relays in June.

As a Provincially and Nationally Recognized Club Our Athletes Compete at all Levels From school, local, regional, national and international championships.
